Travel vaccinations

I need to get jabs for going to Africa in 6 weeks, GP can only give appointment at the end of Oct, although might get a cancellation.

Anyone know if I have to go to my GP, can I go to a different one, near work?

You'll have to go private, search for your local travel vacation clinic. The NHS is pretty useless for what they can give at a gp surgery. Check online for what jabs you need, being Africa it'll be plenty, yellow fever and malaria tabs will possibly be a starter. Don't be surprised at the cost, £200+

drop in and be nice to the receptionist, flutter your eyelids, it's usually the nurse that does the jabs anyhow.

Is it a yellow fever affected area.... if it is that is a must, though IIRC they will jab you on arrival for a premium if you have not had it, at least thats what they operated last time I was in DAR.

I am off to East Africa next week and the only extra I have needed is Meningitis ACWY which was a private prescription, I got typhiod booster for free at the GP, then you have Malarials....meh...doxy is what I tend to go for. You can malarone over the counter. You need a private prescription for doxy.

I had the following:

Yellow fever
Hep A&B
Typhoid
Tetanus/diphtheria/polio
Rabies
Cholera
Meningitis ACWY

However, I'm working out in Africa pretty much full time and you probably won't need them all for a short visit.

If you need Yellow Fever then make sure you carry the certificate as pretty much every African airport I've landed in has asked to see it before you even get to immigration.

If there's a Masta travel clinic near you then they should be able to fit you in pretty quick. Remember there's a ten day incubation period for yellow fever before you can travel to any countries that require it.

Got a cancellation at my GP for the stuff they could do and travel clinic for Yellow Fever and the certificate so all good to go now.

Just hoping I'm not the 1 in 100,000 who according to the nurse get numbness or tingly fingers or depressive thoughts as a result of YF!

The travel company have mailed about the state of emergency and are confident that it'll all be OK. If you never see me posting on PH again you'll know they were wrong!
