Stinging Pain In Leg

Woken up at 4am this morning with a very sharp stinging pain in my leg. It lasts a couple of seconds then subsides and repeats randomly every few seconds/minutes. Had good look and can't see anything on the surface which is causing it. Any ideas what it is and how to treat it? Could it be shingles?
