NHS number

Been living overseas for several years and have now moved back to our house in England. Yesterday i went to our old GP to see about registering with them again, and found my records have been returned to head office.
Daughter and wife are still on the books though.

For me to re-register i need to give them my NHS number. To be honest i have never even heard of it before.

The GP operatives were adamant it was up to me to produce it, but I made some phone calls and was told only a GP can apply....

Anybody know what i should do?

I took out health insurance for our first year here because I heard we cannot get full use of NHS for a while, but I still need to register with a GP.

Thanks for the reply, I'm 'off the grid' with Internet currently, using Starbucks to stay connected.

I did lots of research, phone calls, all over Starbucks wifi, went back to the GP armed with my data......and the receptionist told me 'we actually have your number already but couldn't tell you because we had your date of birth wrong'........

Okay, you mean the date of birth that was on the card sent to you buy our previous GP in 2002?.... FFS.......
