Many (about 15!) years ago I was a frequent gym user, I'm now 44, pretty big 'standard' look, 6'3", 15 stone looks ok on me, 16 stone and I notice it, but I do seem to move between the two quite readily. I somehow have kept a bit of definition in my arms and upper body, but my belly is starting to look a bit 'wobbly' which needs to go. I just jumped on the scales (granted with hoody and jeans) and the number started with a 17!

I had cellulitis before Christmas and just finished having an open wound regularly packed and dressed plus over a week into a heavy cold. Feeling pretty rotten at the moment, but my plan was to do *some* exercise every day, in theory being better than none. My old dog died in the summer so my only reason for walking etc has gone. As he slowed down over the years, so did I, now I'm an absolute slob.

No plans to join a gym, so any tips for someone who might as well never have exercised before. Preferably in the comfort/secrecy of my own home! I think the missus has a 'Wii fit' or something under the stairs (never been used) so might dig this out, but I'm really starting at the bottom. I read the 100 press ups thread towards the end of last year and did 13 as a one off - having not done a press up for over a decade so hopefully there's potential.

I've always eaten a lot but have pretty much been sat on my backside for a year. New job starting in March and appreciate I need to watch the calories, but also need to get myself motivated and hopefully start to enjoy exercising again, but in baby steps.

A thread on here helped me (eventually) get off the cigs and even typing this will hopefully be the first step.

Get another dog would be a start, or have you had enough?

Do you like any particular sport or fancy trying a new one? Pick a sport and seek out a local club preferably one that doesn't only insist you play for a team and have to do trials.

I started playing tennis about 4 years ago, aged 40. Found a local club, had some lessons. I'm still pretty st at it but I get to sprint around a court with spins, leaps and rapid changes in direction that you wouldn't expect a 44 year old to do.

If you don't like the cold, why not try something like badminton or racketball. Or even sign up to something like a local kickboxing club if you'd prefer something more violent.

Get rid of the cold first, it'll only hold you back. Look at what your eating and clean out the crap. Just start off walking again, add distance and up the pace. Swimming is great for getting back into exercise,

seconding the swimming suggestion. As you haven't being doing exercise, swimming is low-impact which will help to stop you getting injured. You can improve quite rapidly (I started struggling to do 10 lengths in 20 minutes, within about 6 months I could do 100 lengths in under an hour) and once you realise that not everyone in the pool is looking at you, you feel much more comfortable.

Go for a walk. It's free!

I've got a fitbit and I'm doing 15,000 steps per day from a morning and evening walk. I'm burning 3,000 calories per day and eating 1,500 ish so losing 2lbs per week.

3000 calories from 15000 steps is impressive, what's your pace? I'm using my fitness pal and with 1.5hrs judo and a 5 mile run it's telling me 3000ish calories to eat

I think he means in total, for all activity, calories used for the day, not just for the 15k steps.

Certainly don't run and don't do bodyweight exercises like press ups without first learning how to do them properly. At your weight, you'll knacker your shoulders pretty quickly doing bad form press ups.

I would suggest lots of walking and diet control to lose a stone or two and then reading up about how to do weight training (including bodyweight training) without injury.

Correct, 3,000 for the day. Easy to eat less than that.

Thanks all. Baby steps.

Set up the Wii Fit thing when the kids came back from school today. They jogged and jumped with me and we all laughed along (I'm secretly a bit pooped now). It even made my character look a bit more chubby when it first clocked my weight - bloomin' cheek.

Also got an app to do those press/sit-ups programmes. Press ups 8,9,7,7,4 & 6,7,6,5,6 yesterday & today (as instructed based on initial tests).

Already feel I've broken the first psychological barrier of getting started. Hoping to dig my bike out tomorrow which is buried behind broken mowers and all sorts. Kids got new bikes for Christmas (although daughter a bit wobbly still) so family rides in order me thinks. New job in March which is only 3 miles away although all downhill on the way in and uphill home!

Conscious of what I'm eating although lack of activity is the main problem. I don't normally eat junk I just have a very poor routine (one BIG meal in the evening, which I can't imagine will change any time soon).

Please look up how to do press ups properly. Very very few people do. Doing them badly will crap up your shoulders very quickly.
