I'm a fat bd, have recently started to do *some* exercise which is currently limited to loading 'Wii Fit' on the Nintendo and a few press-ups etc. Doing Wii Fit with the kids has made it enjoyable and I've lost a few pounds already (big whoop!).

Today the unthinkable happened. I was walking to a neighbour's house and I broke out into a 'jog' (of some description). It was only a few minutes but I couldn't have imagined doing something like that even a few weeks ago. We're a little out in the sticks with loads of farm tracks and borders round fields that I could 'jog' around. But I don't have anything even vaguely resembling sports footwear, let alone anything for such surfaces.

I would like to limit my running to places away from passing traffic etc. Certainly until I look a little less ungainly.

Any recommendations for a decent pair of starter trainers? I'm unlikely to run through streams or in the rain if that makes a difference.

Funnily enough I'm looking at replacing my Brooks GTS 15s with GTS 17s at this very moment.

I'm a big guy and they're very comfy and supportive, I also have the ASR 12 GTX which are waterproof.

It's well worth heading to a local running shop and chatting with someone - they'll be able to guide you more specifically based on your own requirement and I found them very helpful.

Have you got a Sweatshop near you? As your a big guy I would suggest getting them to check your gait and suggest what type of trainers you would need. Its free and they often have lots of trainers in store or online.

No doubt someone will come along and say that is overkill, but if you running on trails would be best to get a suitable pair to protect ankles etc. Plus you can pick half decent pairs up for £50 etc.

Agreed go to a run shop and get checked out you will pay full whack for a pair but it will be worth it.

I've just started running ended up needing a support shoe as my right foot kicks out a bit sideways tried on many brands it's amazing the difference you feel between them.

I settled on a pair of saucony as they felt spot on.

Salomon XA Pro3D

I got these for the couch to 5k in May 2016. Rationalised that if I didn't keep up running, would make good walking shoes.

Now running up to 20k off road in them. They come up a bit small try in shop or order a half size up.

Another vote for the Salomon Speedcross. I believe the Speedcross 4 is the latest model. Should be bargains on the previous generation.

I'm on my 8th pair of the Speedcross 3. The pattern does wear out quite quickly but you can transition them to walking shoes and buy another pair for running. Great excuse for new shoes.
