Kidney infection - oh boy it's painful!

I've had a back ache for a little over a week. It improved a bit before the weekend but came back with a vengence on Sunday so I spoke with my GP yesterday and have been prescribed an antibiotic and a painkiller.
I hope they kick in soon as though I have a high pain threshold, I rate this as a 7/10. I've never known a pain like it, searing into my lower back when I stand up, sit down, lie down or even move more than a tiny bit.
Has anyone else experienced a kidney infection and how long before life as we know it returns?

Kidney infection or Kidney stones?
Stones are a world of hurt until they pass. My wife was taken to hospital when she had the stones.

Bad luck. I had a kidney stone about 3 years ago. I was fat, out of shape, smoked, and relatively sedentary. I can honestly describe it as the most horrendous experience of my life. I started by pissing blood at a wedding and wondered if it was the beetroot in the starter! Blood in my wee got worse on the Sunday so in the evening I took myself to A&E in Geneva. They scanned me and said I had a blockage and to see the urologist. The urologist the next day said I definitely had a kidney stone but needed to have an MRI to properly diagnose and find out the size (it turned out to be 16mm across). I didn't make it to the planned MRI scan as I woke up the next day in excruciating pain, puking my guts out. My girlfriend shoved me in the car with a bucket. Got to the hospital and was stabilised. They knocked it out that day. Cost my insurance a total of CHF7600. I was very glad I went fully comp.
If the pain doesn't go away, I would go to the hospital and get an MRI scan (not sure of availability on NHS but in Switzerland I was seen next day) to get it diagnosed properly.

I've had two kidney stones. The first gave me none of the usual symptoms, blood, kidney pain etc but was properly lodged in my urinary tract so apart from a not being able to pee properly, there were no other symptoms.
After that episode I woke up one morning in extreme pain! I had some X-Rays and Scans and was given the all clear that there weren't any kidney stones in there. A week later, I passed a kidney stone. It was only small, probably just a few millimeters. I was a bit miffed that being told I was stone free, I had the pleasure of passing another one.
It was the first one that was utter misery! I had it lodged for a month and was generally a pretty horrible experience. If you're feeling brave, go and search for a detailed post I put up about it
The second one absolutely floored me, I was in agony...and then a few hours later it was all forgotten about until it passed.

Was very very very poorly with pyelonephritis a few years back. Sympathy, it sucks big hairy ones. Assuming you're on the right antibiotic, you should be feeling a little bit better by now and will be most of the way there in 3-4 days usually. DO NOT STOP YOUR ANTIBIOTICS EARLY - finish the course even if you feel totally recovered. I hope they kick in soon as though I have a high pain threshold, I rate this as a 7/10. Plenty of fluids, paracetamol for the high temperature, take care of yourself fella. Get well soon!

Thanks, I'm feeling quite a bit better this afternoon. I haven't had a fever which surprised my GP I think, just the unbearable pain in my back which, at long last, is easing off.
