It can't be anything too obvious as my regular (diabetic) blood tests aren't showing up anything out of the ordinary, but I now always feel weak and sore with a feeling of losing power very quickly, I can still lift the family shopping into the house, in more or less one go, but should I go to drink from a 2 litre bottle of fizzy water the weakness in my arms just feels wrong.

Had a really bad cough that started before Christmas and lasted for 3 months and it has reduced my peak flow from 850 to what some would still describe as a healthy 650, but I've had the odd laughing or coughing fit which does feel as if I could asphyxiate myself from, if I was to panic. Tell me this feeling of weakness is not just my advancing years (late 40s).

Old age, at your age (!) shouldn't leave you debilitated, I suspect something viral / nervous system related. Do you exercise at all? Smoke? Eat excessively? Drink?

Vitamin D deficiency?

I've just been put on a super strength course to get my energy levels back to normal.

While I'm a whale, I don't smoke and don't go mad on the beer, couple of pints in a pub no more than once a week. I'll explore the Vit D angle.

Worth noting that most blood tests don't include Vitamin D testing - mine was done once we'd ascertained it wasn't related to my heart condition.

It's funny - I'm the 4th or 5th person in my running club who have had issues with Vitamin D, which is really odd given how much time we spend outside running.

I should imagine that, and the lack of real exercise and poor diet which caused that are all contributing factors.

Google Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

In its mildest form it has the symptoms you describe (amongst others- it is just a name for a bunch of symptoms with poorly understood causes) and is said to be the result of viral infections although there is no agreement on the mechanism.

I have had similar- it should pass off. I found vitamin B12 helpful; best by injection (talk to your GP) although tablets may help, and certainly won't do any harm.

Don't be put off by the fact that Margaret Thatcher was a devotee of B12!

Late 40's isn't old age, weakness isn't normal, and regular blood tests don't check "everything" by some distance.

Consider getting a real diagnosis.

I was getting whale like but have lost 18kg since Christmas and the difference is my energy levels incredible. I don't do "exercise" any more just nice long walks every day with the Dog.

Would echo this, I have dropped from over 18 stone to 14 and a half, have added muscle in that time as well,

You get out what you put in, I was feeling my age, day in day out, felt crap, slow and old, started in September at the gym and sorted the diet out and the difference is incredible, more energy, look better, feel better and there are many other side benefits, i.e. like if bedroom activity was flagging, little (fnarr) things like morning wood, ok, have snigger, but hadnt seen that for some time, now my wife has somewhere to hang her dressing gown every morning ! I jest but to me, its like when they clean up a river and fish are spotted back in it, its a sign that things are improving, the theory is, when fat it messes with your hormone levels, you have less testosterone and more Oestrogen, lose weight, do strength training and the levels return and in turn the majestic morning boner is reinstated in all its tumescent majesty, stuff like that is important and we dont talk about it.

I do quite a bit of exercise now, I always did something but ate too much, am into my last stone to lose, got a Personal Trainer once a week for a while and am aiming not to just be ok, want to make the best of what I have at 46.

Its things like working on the car, can squat and get up so easily, but then, without 45 pounds about my person and stronger legs, its not surprising.

You refer to yourself as a "Whale", you dont need to be, in a years time you could be a er, Dolphin ? dont just accept feeling crap as age, it is probably weight, we arent designed to carry vast amounts of excess weight, it is meant to be a few pounds from the good times to sustain us through the lean times, if we dont have any lean times we get fat.

I am now a bit of a zealot but it is borne of the difference this has made to my life, not claiming physical perfection, I have just seen it from the perspective of being heavier, to an almost normal weight in a few months, and I want people to realise all the stuff doctors tell us is true, and so many medical issues are the result of excess weight, lose it and you will feel better, a double whammy of the actual loss and the positivity that comes with it.

You end up feeling crap so reach for the crap food for some pleasure, have a few drinks to numb it as well, then you have to go to work and feel rubbish, your pants cutting you in half, then there are all the doctors visits for various issues, most of which will dissapear, or lessen when your weight comes down, you need to see the long term view rather than the short term joy of a takeaway, which is what fuels the problem, it ist even that long term, as I mentioned, a year would sort most peoples issues out if they are dilligent and consistent.

Slim/fit people arent a different species, anyone can be what they want to be, they just need to turn that corner and go down a different path.

Sort the diet out
Join a gym
Walk
Cut out booze
get or borrow a bike
Use MyFitnesspal

Do something every day, 30 mins activity.

Above all, dont give up on it and accept being knackered into your fifties, with a tweak now, loads of good years to come, without, who knows.

We can get away with stuff when younger, its like your body is under warranty, over 40, warranty has expired, you need to look after it.

If nothign else, go to the docs and when you get asked those questions, you can answer knowing you are doing your best so it removes the guilt.

But, go and get checked out, could be something else but weight is my guess, nobody shoudl describe themselves as a Whale, it will really help your self image, and probably turn you into an insufferable prick like me biggrin

Go for it, join the Phat Fighters thread and let us know of your transformation into greek god.

^^ This every time, I tend to put on a couple of stone over winter as I can't do my usual exercise. You can really feel the difference.

I swam a mile this morning, I'll cycle eighteen miles home this evening. I'm 52.

My FB post this morning was rather spookily "you don't stop exercising because you get old, you get old because you stop exercising".

Does late 40's equate to old age these days!

Same as Winston and J4CKO, I started training and changed diet on a permanent basis at aged 47, I am now 50 and probably stronger and fitter than I have ever been (definitely stronger)

Changing from your old fat and lethargic self, half accepting life is all downhill from hereon in to doing something about it is like being released from the chains you have put yourself in for years, very liberating.

Just eating the right stuff and doing a bit of exercise is all you need - at our age, we also do not need to eat too much, even when training for 8 hours a week, very easy to think you can still scoff what you used to without any adverse results...

So a whole family chicken pie is to much? 😂 You are right with the giving up at 40 attitudes, most of the blokes on my estate are fat knackers who wheeze and puff around with their kids
