I popped over to my sisters house to notice her 1 year old son wearing clothes that are probably made for 1.5 year old.. The outfit is probably 4/5/6 inches longer. He's literally dragging his clothes around. My theory is that (especially at this age then they're developing and leaning to crawl/stand up/walk, wearing clothes that are way to big would have an affect his development... Surely he's learn to stand up/walk in a certain manner that overgrown clothes would effect!?

Or am I being a little thick on the subject!?

It could make a bit of a difference if it was the case that he was wearing something that affected his movement absolutely all the time, but one (or even several) too-big outfits - especially considering that babies that age often go through a few outfits in a day - really wouldn't do a lot.

My daughter spent some months between sizes 9-12 and 12-18 months, it was ludicrous. She wasn't mobile so it wasn't like it could cause her a problem but she looked very daft in rolled-up leggings for quite a while.

Smile, roll the trouser legs up for him, disentangle his hands if he gets stuck and let his mum get on with it. smile
