Ah yes, I remember life before we had a baby, when a single night of 2 hours sleep was an event to be remembered.

Early 2011, went to a foam party in a club in shorts and t-shirt (yes in the middle of winter) but didn't drink.

After it was over went to my friends house where I was staying where after rinsing ourselves off in the bath whilst his great dane drank the bathwater and his mother stood wondering what was going on I settled down to sleep in his room whereby he proceeded to talk non stop in a drunken daze for the entire night.

By 4am I thought fk this and decided to go home only i'd driven to his in my mum's car and parked on his drive whilst his car was parked on the street blocking half the drive. I then spent the next 20 mins trying to push his car out the way (he always left his car unlocked and so could release the handbrake) in shorts and t-shirt with no shoes on in the freezing cold to no avail. Luckily I managed to get my mums car past only just and proceeded to drive home in wet clothes and no shoes only to arrive at my parents at around 6am in a very bad mood.

I slept for about two days afterwards and swore off foam parties for the rest of my life.

On intravenous morphine. Saw things I would not wish on my worst enemy.
That was early ‘90s, and those nightmares bothered me for years.

Just google "undiagnosed OSA", the worst nights sleep ever - for months on end.

OP doesn't have children either I am assuming.

We were once unexpectedly bumped forward from cattle class on a flight back from Florida, shared the section with an autistic child who screamed and shook a rattly toy all night. It would have been churlsh to complain, thank goodness we were being collected from the airport for the four hour trip home.

Remembered another, years ago went out with my mates down to the coast, it was the winter and we all thought it would be a laugh to go into the sea in our clothes; it was fun for about a minute!

Come out of the sea, all wet and cold and it is late, so we drive home in my mates MkI Fiesta, however he is tired and keeps nodding off whilst driving so we pull up at some services and spend the night, soaking wet trying to kip, 4 up in his car.

We didn't get a great deal of sleep that night.

Most nights for the last 2 1/2 years.

Live in a block of flats and have noisy neighbours who party till 2/3am or slam doors at random hours, coupled with them waking up at 7am on workdays. No idea how/when they sleep.

Living on 4-5hrs sleep for this long messing me up, borderline diabetic with anger management issues, no idea how parents of new borns get by!

Environmental Health, freeholder, police and managing agent can give no assistance.

Put money aside where I can to move on, estate agents tell me it's unsellable and unrentable now, so would be stuck with a mortgage even if I could live elsewhere. Sleeping in my car not uncommon.

Had supraspinatus tendonosis in my right shoulder.
Had not slept throught the night until I had a steroid and LA injection 2w ago.
Chronic pain is just so life destroying.

As a houseman I did a 16 day stretch of 1:2 on call; so start 0800 Monday, work until 1800 Tues, back in 0800 Wed - 1800 Thurs then 0800 Fri until 1800 Mon and continue. Not a day off for 16d and working through every other night.
Was not running at full speed after the first few days really. Hopefully there were not too many excess deaths on the wards... Life as a junior doctor was quite challenging in the 1990s.

The night before a crew change on my ship. I nodded off and suddenly woke up gasping for breath, heart pounding, feeling terrified. I calmed down, nodded off, and it happened again. I was convinced my brain had forgotten how to breath....and it went on all night.

I think I eventually dozed off just before dawn and felt like death warmed up, terrified it was going to happen for ever more and I'd never sleep properly again.

On the first flight, going home, New Orleans to Washington I was right at the back, window seat, and I started getting incredibly claustrophobic and panicking, and came so close to simply running off the plane before they closed the doors. I knew that if I did that I'd probably never be able,to get onboard a plane ever again. So I fought the terror down and managed to get home. I did doze off briefly on a couple of the flights, after a few glasses of wine.......

I found later it is basically mini-panic attacks I was having, and it came back to haunt me several times, but only when I was offshore.

I just came out of hospital yesterday. I was receiving a blood transfusion and the final flush through didn't finish until 1am. Obviously can't sleep while I'm connected up to the machine, so when it finished I was glad to get some sleep. Another patient was wheeled into the ward at 2.15am, unfortunately he had dementia of some sort and was very restless and wandered about all night.

I was terrified he was going to inflict harm on me, so had to stay awake. He dozed off at 4am but then wet the bed around 5am. The nurses had to see to him and then change the bed.

So just over an hour's sleep when I'm seriously ill, must rank as my worst night's sleep.

Oh and I concur about what someone posted earlier about being on intravenous morphine. In another stay in hospital a few years back, I was hooked up to the machine where you pressed the button and it gave you shot of morphine...that gave me some odd dreams/visions and rather disturbed sleep that night.

I am a bad sleeper. It' Saturday and I was hoping to get a lie in until 7ish but 5am I'm bloody awake again. Last night just pretty much rolled around in my bed all night as far as I can tell. I must have got a couple of hours though.

For some reason every 1-3 years I get this immense groin pain that feels like someone's kicked me there. Sometimes the pain and last all night. on occasion I was up until 6am before it went away.

about 9years ago I had a really bad inflammation in my gums that needed strong antibiotics and me taking codeine constantly for 2 weeks. the codeine wore off at about 3am and i woke up. I had none left so had to wake up my friend and drive to his place 20min away so i could get back to sleep.

That was early ‘90s, and those nightmares bothered me for years.
In December '04 I was in a serious RTA and ended up in Intensive Care for the next 3 weeks. I don't recall anything about the accident itself (thankfully) but I had several weeks of intense hallucinations / nightmares. I was convinced that I had killed 3 children and that there were people trying to take revenge on me. The ceiling above my bed was glass (obviously it wasn't but I wasn't able to rationalise things that now I know were clearly in my head) and I could see and hear people looking down on me and plotting how they would take their revenge. I have no idea why, but they all had Scouse accents! There was also a woman, with a heavy Irish accent, who would throw dead and bloody lambs carcasses at me. I also believed people were trying to set light to the ward as they knew I wouldn't be able to make my escape, or I would hear visitors talking about how they could attack me when no-one was around. There were details like one chap saying he could wear his Mothers rings as he punched me, so that they would inflict injuries. One of the final 'dreams' I recall was my sitting on a sofa in a nightclub. I was still in halo-traction (where they literally bolt a metal ring to your skull, which is in turn bolted to a thick plastic waistcoat to keep your neck and back immobilised. (this was real) so it seems bizarre anyway, but then a guy told me I had been duped into coming to the nightclub as he was wanted by the Police and he planned to burn the club down in the hope my body would be taken as being his. I literally broke down pleading for my life.

There were many things that I imagined or dreamed in those weeks. Most were pretty scary and often horrific, although some were just plain funny. Such as the Doctor I could hear talking to a Nurse about my planned treatment and its funding. He said they would be taking the ''essence of me'' (my personality or identity) from my body and suspending it in a clear fluid. Once my body was mended they could literally just put me back in. The main drawback though, was the cost of this treatment. As he said that, I saw a new black Range Rover pull up outside the French doors to my right. Across it's flanks were Palitoy and Action-Man in huge orange letters and in came the driver, declaring that they would be taking care of my health bills. At the time this seemed perfectly feasible!

This all happened in December 2004 and into 2005, yet I can remember it all so vividly still. I spent nearly a year in hospital and my life was saved by the Cornwall Air Ambulance. The car I was in had caught ablaze so I am sure that influenced my 'dreams'. The sound and smell (there's a slight smell of aviation fuel when it landed near my ward) of the helicopter was tough to cope with for a long time and certainly triggered unpleasant feelings. Apologies if I have rambled a bit but thinking about those nights makes me feel a lot of gratitude for all who helped me.

ETA

Just wanted to make it clear that there were no children involved in the RTA.

I had much the same when I was in hospital in Jakarta for a severe chest infection. I was on company coin so I had to share a room. First night the guy I shared with was awake all night, tv on, visitors coming and going, so I got no sleep. During the day there were nurses and doctors in and out all day, so no sleep. After two days I complained, and they moved me.

Lights had to stay on until 11pm for some reason. Cool, some sleep, but no, the doctor woke me at midnight to take blood pressures etc, then a new patient arrived 2 am, and he had docs and visitors for a couple of hours. Then 5am I was woken up for blood pressure again. Wtf??

Next night, new neighbour in the room, who kept waking up for a piss, and turning on the light in MY section of the room, and leaving it on. Then I got up for a piss myself 5am and found he'd st all over the bathroom floor!

That was enough, I stormed out of the room desperately trying to find a place to sleep, even out in the street would have been a blessing, but the staff would not let me leave. Eventually I got a private room of my own.

Damn, the hospital was very nice, but their idea that patients didn't need sleep???
