Removal of toe nail

Well, I sampled the NHS urgent care centre last night - pleasant experience.
Long story short - Got an infection under toenail, had toe nail removed, infection scraped out, send on my way, looking for others who've had similar.
Told 3.5 hour wait, sure no problem, I've arrived unannounced and there are people in far worse a state than I am in A&E next door.
Just under two weeks ago I threw myself off my motorbike in a rather high speed but un dramatic crash (on the race track). My gear is all but ready for the bin and I was unscathed apart from my big toe, rather painful and going very blue.
Being the man I am, I left it as it wasn't too painful, subsequently I'm aware I should have probably had it drilled to relieve all the pressure.
Last night it became too painful, the nail a tad wobbly and it had started to smell. Initially the doctor looked and said we may as well leave it on and it'll fall off soon, he changed his mind after having a poke around and a sniff....
One ring block alter (oh er missus) and it was off revealing a large chunk of infection underneath, with that all gone and scraped away I was wrapped up and sent on my way.
So, anyone had this done before - heal time etc? I've been told to keep the little gauze/bandage on for five days and not get it wet!

I've had this a few times with various toe injuries, I usually just keep the offending foot in the bath for a good while and pull the toenail off myself when it's soft enough, it is pretty sore when there is pressure underneath the nail.
Once it's happened you'll probably find you'll have some ongoing issues with that toenail, they never seem to grow back quite right unfortunately.

had my big toe nails warp and ingrow, to the point that they started to grow through the tip of my toe.
had them removed and the beds removed about 15 years ago.
the left is fine, nothing growing back, the right one however sort of grows a bit and then falls off as if there's nothing keeping it alive.
My feet look like monster munch and scare children.

I had the right big toe nail removed some years back and it's been problematic ever since. In fact, I seem to recall it being removed for a second time and they didn't remove the whole bed, meaning it grows back partially. I used to have this dealt with by a chiropodist but basically I grit my teeth and do it myself now. This usually means a little bleeding, cleaning the effected area with Iodine and job done…till next time.
I've had both of mine done in the past, I put it down to a combination of wearing poor fitting, (too tight) sports shoes and cutting the nails back too short. This lead to them growing in at the edge and cutting in to the toe which was unbearably painful before having them removed under local.
Both have grown back fine now but I would advise letting them grow clear of the sides before cutting them back and try to cut them almost straight across leaving more of the white part at the sides.
