Trusting a new dentist when only dentist at practice
Discussion
Probably being paranoid here, but I moved so needed to get a new dentist a found a practice up the road, went there and need some work which I was expecting. The things is the dentist in question seems to be the only dentist at the practice though he does work at other practices and his profile on there websites seem ok. I just thought there should always be 2 dentist min ideally at a practice to avoid a dentist on his own get sloppy ? The other thing that put me off was his equipment didn't seem very new, the xray was damaged when they opened then, were as my old dentist it was all computerised.

British dentistry is appalling. Find 2, even 3, dental practices and alternate between them over the year to get second opinions and keep them on their toes.
This, my dentist in France spends his whole time tutting when seeing the work done. Now corrected all the substandard work and he does it pain free, unlike the last one who seemed to relish in being very careless with his assorted implements of torture.(Took some time to word this to avoid the sniggers in the cheap seats!)
I had a poor dentist for years, who then retired just after I was old enough to think about it for myself (I saw him when my parents took me then for a few years later).
Then a young, fresh dentist appeared, about 25-27yo, looked a little bit like a young Tom Hanks but with the most piercing bluey white eyes.
I wasn't very good with dentists but he reassured me and his treatment was pain free and friendly. I think I had a little bit of man love for him, he was so nice.
Then he went and rolled his Lotus one morning on the way to work and killed himself...

I'd remove you from my list if you did that. Imagine if you did that to every specialist you encountered. It is that kind of "God complex" and "doctor knows best" attitude that makes British dentistry so bad. The culture in the industry is one of absurd arrogance.
My dentist is top notch but I pay a price for it. Knowing I get top materials and treatment gives peace of mind. Just spent a fortune on an implant- could have got it cheaper but finding someone Intrust wouldn't have been easy.
My practice has two dentists and a dedicated hygienist (whose costs are also not cheap but results very good!)

As the OP states, there's a view that single handed anything is not good for maintaining standards.
If it doesn't feel right, just like with anything else in life, then it probably isn't right for you.
Seek out recommendations or check NHS Choices:

It's Yipper. He just talks s
te, all day long.OP - where did you hear that two dentists should work at one practice to prevent one becoming sloppy? That seems a very odd rule indeed, insofar as it doesn't appear to have any basis in logic.

Sounds like nonsense to me too. Does that mean that artisan watchmakers should never work alone because their watches will come out rubbish?
