My Father has developed a severe pain in his thigh area, so much he can barely walk. He is 74 but until the other day was still driving, walking a few miles per day. He also can't lie in bed due to the pain, bent over seams to be the most comfortable position, straightening up agrevates it. 60mg of codine isn't even taking the edge off it.

I've had him to a physio who suggested it could be a pulled muscle but the pain is excruciating.

Also took him to A&E after a referral from NHS 24, he was seen by an Orthopaedic doctor who also diagnosed it as a ruptured thigh muscle.

So my question, is it possible to get such severe pain from a muscle pull? And can it also restrict your mobility as much as this? He can't really get about the house, no way he could drive, can't shower himself etc. He's been in great health until this, but this pain has reduced him to tears.

Thanks for any input.

Seems a lot of pain from a muscle injury, I've had a fair few bad ones from a variety of sports - the bad ligament ones where 'feck I've broken my knee' type pain when I did them.

One 'dead leg' which create a foot long blood sausage (phnarr, phnarr...etc) in my thigh was fecking painful for a significant period.

Given, I'd guess, he's not just finished a game against London Welsh it's probably worth investigating further

I have just recovered from a similar injury and can confirm that it was very very painful.

So bad I was unable to lie flat for three weeks and experienced agonising cramps, lack of sleep just about finished me off.

I've had injuries before but this was so bad I'm sure if I'd had a gun I would have shot myself.

Painkillers hardly touched it, looking back I think physio would have helped, certainly loafing around didn't seem to do much good.

I had a suspected pulled thigh muscle about 6 weeks ago, which was very painful - couldn't walk and pain worse at night. I found the ibruprofen gel max strength 10% helped, also nurofen tablets. Swimming and hydrotherapy pool also.
I'm currently waiting for an MRI scan to find out where the problem lies.

Thanks for the replies, the pain hasn't eased any. I think he will need admitted to hospital, due to the severe pain and lack of mobility.

confused

You think PH is better to answer this than the Orthopaedic Doc? Why didn't you just ask him these questions?

Yes, I did ask the doctor at the time. To be honest the staff in A&E gave the impression off trying to get us out the door with a few pain killers and a pair of crutches. No X-ray or scan offered.

My uncle lost a leg because the doctors kept assuming a pain in his calf was a muscular issue.

Turned out to be an incoming DVT, that they then mistreated in hospital and cut his leg off above the knee.

Worth getting another opinion if you're not happy.

Why the lack of trust in the diagnosis? Is this something you've experience of and don't think fits the presentation?

He now been admitted to hospital, still in serious pain. No further diagnosis, the doc thinks it may be coming from his back.

That sounds very much like he's torn a muscle. I remember tearing a thigh muscle when I was younger right before going on holiday.

I can say I have never experienced such excruciating pain since, couldn't walk unaided for about three weeks and no amount of painkillers made it better.

Is he on statins? Chances are that he is, and it might just be a side-effect. Happened to me recently after many years on simvastatin, but was put down to knee osteoarthritis. Then my GP reviewed my QRISK2, said come off statins to re-check cholesterol, and all my leg pains stopped.

He was seen by an Orthopaedic doctor, but no follow-up plan or admission? Did you take notes? Did you get a copy of the notes they should send to your GP. Did you not get all these details? If not go back, go to PALS (patient liaison service - basically complaints), or just go back to A&E again.
