A friend 'not me' claims otherwise but is alcohol-dependent and practically a functioning alcoholic. They smoked a lot
but gave up twice and has been on inhalators (Nicorette) for three years. Now, 'mild COPD' has been diagnosed and the new version of salbutamol
inhalers has been prescribed. My friend's lessened ability to cope with sustained exercise (e.g. hill walking) was the first indication.

Doing a bit of research on their behalf, I spotted a link between heavy consumption of alcohol and lung function. Apparently, the alcohol is broken down into toxic aectaldehyde (among other things) in the liver. This uses two compounds to attack the acetaldehyde, one being gutathione. The problem is that a heavy drinker's stock of this runs out and the unaffected toxicity can cause bronchoconstriction (narrowing airways) and also undermine the mucociliary clearance system (the lungs' self-cleaning mechanism).

The upshot of all this (note I'm not claiming a causal link) is that supplementary glutathione could help. I got some L-glutamine but it seems that liposomal glutamine is absorbed more easily.

I'm just wondering if anyone's heard of this. So far, my friend reports feeling better on the inhaler and L-glutamine but it's early days.
