Bad chest cough anyone?
Discussion
Not just you, there's some nasty bugs going around. Had flu like symptoms now for the last 3 weeks, blocked sinuses, loads of snot, with a nasty cough. Been quite draining and I've struggled to get through the week.
It's not the severity that's the issue, it's how long this has dragged on. I caught flu last year in hospital when I went to have gallbladder out, that was a week of grot and 6 months of gradual tail end of the flu.
I know quite a few people that are experiencing the same symptoms, long, drawn out cold with a nasty chesty cough, blocked sinuses and flu like symptoms that drag on for 4 weeks or so.

All for of us have this and have done for 3 weeks. Me, wife , 3 yr old and 1 year old. On top of this the 1 year old is teething.
I think I’ll go back to work. Seems to have hit me least but I think that’s because I’ve still been going out for the odd bike ride which seems to clear the head a bit.

Confirmed cases of Influenza A and Influenza B have shot up in the last week so it seems flu season has begun. The usual chest infection culprits such as Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae are also quite prevalent at the moment. We had a run on RSV positives a couple of weeks ago as well but that seems to have died off a bit.
I think I'd go to the GP at this stage if it's been going on for a month.
I'm not a clinician (I just work in the lab) but I think most virus' would have shifted by now.
So if it's more likely bacterial and the Amoxicillin hasn't worked then you may have to go and get something else.
I think the adverts would have you seeing the GP at this stage!

Mine has suddenly and dramatically cleared in the last few days. Still a bit grotty and sudden waves of extreme tiredness but went for a good stiff walk up the hills and felt a lot better for doing so.I saw some friends at a "gathering" on saturday and a few of them were really suffering with exactly the same symptoms. I still had the bad headaches but they were not amused when I said it would last another 3 weeks for them.
I've found the thick mucus eases if I drink a lot and go for brisk, invigorating walks. Certainly helped in the last couple of days to shift the cobwebs.
Just don't overdo it. I had a rough chest for a week or so, with lots of sticky gunky phlegm. I've not taken any antibiotics (long story why) and the grotty chest cleared of its own accord. Today has been the first day in 3 weeks I haven't snoozed in the day time, nor needed any paracetamol, flu remedies etc. Still using sudafed nose spray though, will have to go cold turkey on that, methinks...
I had it last year. It started the morning we flew into England, December 29th, and three miserable, clogged up, hoarse, rasping weeks later I finally bottled and went to the docs. On the door was a sign telling me not to, to stay at home, to rest, take ibuprofen etc.
I got an appointment and sat in the waiting room. On the wall right next to me was a poster telling people if they have had a cough for three weeks or more to see their doc now, it could be lung cancer.......

It's the difference between a cough and a cold.I got an appointment and sat in the waiting room. On the wall right next to me was a poster telling people if they have had a cough for three weeks or more to see their doc now, it could be lung cancer.......
I have had the same for 4 weeks. chest infection, lost voice, mucus, worse in mornings for sure.
Was just getting over it a week ago then the man flu came which went round our office at a pace.
Felt crap for four weeks now but definately inproving this week as have done nothing and I mean nothing for a week.
For me part of it is low immune system after lots of travel too so as its xmas I am mostly resting which is obviously what I need.
Lots of it about this year.

almost 6 weeks for me now, started off with blocked sinus, cough, etc. I have asthma so thew cough on my chect was debilitating and I sucked dry a few inhalers.
went to the dox after 4 weeks (still had chesty cough by no sinus snot) and he said i'd done the right thing, gave me amoxicillin and a bunch of steriods. That took a week to do any real good, and now another week of getting rid of it bit by bit each day.

Are you on any blood pressure tablets? Do a search for that and dry cough. I take ramipril.
I couldn't get rid of mine for weeks until a colleague of mine told me to do a search.
I stopped the tablets for 4 days the cough went. Then went back on them again.
I was on that, all perfect until I got a cough or cold then it was horrendous.I couldn't get rid of mine for weeks until a colleague of mine told me to do a search.

Stupidly I put up with it for ages until one of my ribs broke during a coughing fit.
My GP put me on Losartan instead and all the problems went.
I am 6 weeks in with this now/. Started as a cough and feeling tired, by Xmas holidays I felt awful, sore throat, headache etc. I didn't do myself any favours over Xmas staying up late and drinking. I haven't drank since Xmas day but still can't shake it. Not been sleeping well but have been getting sleep.
Just left with a cough and extreme tiredness. I went to the Dr and she said it was post viral cough/fatigue and to ride it out. Listener to my chest and said it was clear.
Pissing me off now. Was supposed to start training for Ironman Lanzarote this week and haven't done any exercise for 6 weeks now.

Same here. Going to have to ring the GP's and get a nasal steroid spray for starters, during the worst I used sudafed nose spray for the congestion which helped a lot, but now on the third bottle and suffering the rebound effect. In short, after a while the spray will clear the congestion but prolonged use means that when it wears off, the congestion returns worse than before, leading you to reach for the spray over and over again.
+1 to the fatigue. Last week needed a 30 minute rest on the sofa in the office, as soon as I'm home it's 30 mins to an hour sleep and like a zombie all evening.
Today didn't wake up till 10am, had an hour asleep 6pm till 7pm and to put it bluntly, I'm off my tits right now. Trying to follow this new thingy on BBC1 but struggling to actually follow it.
Quite bad post viral depression setting in as well. Normally I'm a right cheeky sod but even my wicked sense of humour is somewhat flat.
The other development for me is bad anxiety. Heart palpitations, shakes, struggling for breath. Might be due to the caffeine in the cold and flu capsules, but it isn't pleasant.
Comes and goes in waves, have a good active day, followed by a crappy day. Took the xmas decorations down yesterday, by 11pm was in a stupor with fatigue, couldn't even be arsed to box any of it up today.
Sleeping 9-10 hours a night every night, too.
Other symptoms I'm getting are brain fog and a level of dopeyness that is almost compelling me to have something in the house that's glittery and a broken trampoline in the garden; leopard-print-anything seems classy and I'm scared I should go to the council thread; irritability but possibly down to tiredness, unable to focus on a computer screen, headaches, occasional bad guts, changes to eating habits varying from constantly ravenous to nausea and no appetite.
Other thing I've noticed is a raging thirst.
The flu thing in 2016/2017 I know was a short nasty thing that had a very long 'tail' of 3-5 months, my HR friend said that anyone who went down with it had prolonged work absence and it was the same with swine flu. No reason to think this one is any different, so just going to ride it out. I'm going to get in to a routine of good quality sleep, rest, gentle exercise and plenty of water.
I have this weird feeling in my muscles and body in general, like you really want to go for a run, or brisk walk outside to scratch that itch but lack the energy to do so. It's driving me nuts.
