Had a massive cold last week, blocked nose, sore throat, cough, various aches, you know the kind of thing. It then passed off except for the cough. I have a slight blocked nose, a bit of a sore throat, but I'm coughing most of the day and (it feels like) all night. Can't sleep and my ribs/chest hurts with all the coughing.
There is also an occasional odd noise when I breathe, a squeak or crackling sound.

Does this means I've been hit by a chest infection as well as the cold or is it the cold still lingering on?

Pholcodine linctus works but shouldn't be used if you're coughing up phlegm according to the label.

My cough was never as bad as you describe - but it's hung around for about a month now. It is getting better, and it's almost gone - but the improvement is so slow, I reckon I have at least a week - if not two - before it's gone completely.

Mine lasted the best part of three months frown
Couple of times it subsided only to return - my missus made me go to the doctor who checked me over, said I had a viral infection, and said they called it the 'hundred day cough'.
Mine was dry.

I've had Aussie flu since 31 December. I still have sweats and shiver on occasion, but with lower frequency. The main problem now is coughing. Any change in temperature starts me off. At night I wake up coughing two or three times. It's reducing slowly and the chest pains from coughing have gone.

Paracetamol works to a limited extent, as do wine gums.

I am seriously irritated by it all.

As the public information ads say, if you have a cough that isn't shifting, please do get it checked out. I had one that wasn't shifting, I didn't feel particularly ill, but the ex-squeeze made me go the doctor...and this Friday I have an appointment to find out if I'm going on to the transplant list.

Middle of last week I had an odd "cold".

Was generally fine during the day but when trying to sleep ,nose got all bunged up and plenty of coughing ensued but strangely

I sneezed once all week.

Mostly gone now ,thankfully.
