2 nights now I've got zero sleep. Past week probably a total of 1 nights sleep. Although I'm not sleeping (just resting) I don't actually feel too bad but it's not getting any better.

It's starting to affect my work (self employed) not having the energy to go out and generally feeling like crap with no motivation. Doesn't help that she put mushrooms in yesterday's dinner which doesn't agree with me so spent all last night up with nausea/explosive diarrhea.

Before making an appointment are there any over the counter medications that might help? Or do I really need to see a doctor?

Doctor would be the best bet i would think. In the meantime get to Boots and ask for 'Sleepeaze' tablets, get the 50mg ones, they are behind the counter so you will have to ask for them. You are meant to take one tablet an hour before bed but one may not do the trick so maybe take two.
Take about an hour before you plan going to bed and watch TV to chill and you will soon feel sleepy.
If you go to bed and take the pills you lie there waiting thinking they are doing nothing and get worked up and it's hard to get to sleep then!

Do you suffer with it regularly or is this a one off? There will be a reason for it.

Plenty off medications out there that will knock you out.

Don't watch TV, read a book

Got rid of our bedroom TV when we moved and I've never slept better (Used to really struggle to drop off)

Yep. Bedroom is for 2 things and watching tele isn't one of them.

Thnks for the Sleepeaze suggestion - definitely willing to give anything a try.

I've been suffering for the last 2-3 weeks or so, average 3-4 hours sleep but now to the point I'm just laid there wide awake unable to settle. Nothing has really changed - there's no tv in the room but I guess I do go bed straight from watching tv.

I guess I have been a little stressed/down lately and even woke my misses up in tears early one morning.

I'm keen to avoid 'happy pills' hence why I've avoided the doctors so far. I've tried 5HTP supplement for around a week now but doesn't seem to make a difference - in fact it could be making it worse so have stopped taking these.

Headaches too - seem to get a lot of these but it's probably down to lack of sleep.

I'd try to avoid 'taking' things.
Get things right, like no telly/bright lights an hour before bed, decent bed, correct temperature, properly dark, no extraneous sounds, etc.

If you get the sleepeaze get the 50mg ones not the 25mg.
When I said TV I meant in the living room as like the others have mentioned TV in a bedroom is not great for sleep. Reading is a good bet tho and keep off your phone in the run up to bed. Do you excercise? A walk after dinner or a run/cycle/gym session will definitely help you sleep better at night.

Go see the Doctor, don't worry they may not put you on happy pills and you can refuse these anyway. I was struggling for a bit and lack of sleep was the worst thing, he prescribed some pills that were anti-allergy pills with the stuff from Night Nurse in them but much stronger. They did the trick as they helped me sleep longer, I tried sleeping pills and yes they knocked me out quickly but I was awake 3 hours later wide awake and restless.

See a Doc but in the meantime, excercise, no caffeine and Sleepeaze to give you a helping hand. Best of luck.

Honestly, sound like depression. Do you exercise and eat healthily? Are you getting outside in day light and grabbing some sun light?

All this will help if you don't want to go to the GP.

You might be right although I've got no reason to be depressed but I guess it can spring out of nowhere.

My type of work keeps me active and mostly spent outdoors although Jan & Feb are the hardest 2 months with lack of work/stty weather. I don't exercise as such (apart from when working) and eat healthy(ish)! Partner works long days and I don't (can't) cook so it's too easy to grab something out the freezer!

I'm taking all these points on board so thanks for the input so far guys smile

It's easier talking about it to a bunch of strangers on the internet than face-face with a doctor who I don't particularly like!

OP - don't take 2. A single tablet of 50mg is the maximum recommended dose.

If it's a one-off then taking something to re-establish sleeping patterns probably won't hurt. I used to suffer quite bad sleep disruption on a cyclical basis. I'd go for 2 months or so sleeping fine and then have a week of disrupted sleep.

To break the sleep disturbance I'd take Nytol, but eventually found that a solid dose of Piriton (We'd run out of Nytol and we had some Piriton for the kids) left me felling much better the next morning. It would only take a couple of nights dosing to get me back into the rhythm of sleeping well. Not had any problems for the last couple of years though.

Correct, depression can be brought on with no obvious reasons. But good luck and let's hope you can sort yourself quickly.

If you'd take a Lemsip for a cold, why wouldn't you take sleeping tablets or anti-depressants for insomnia or depression?

Happy to take most medication but not so keen on anti-depressants due to the long list of side effects. Plus I don't need them - I just want the ability to get a nights sleep!

Will try the Sleepeaze..

A lot of the time you'll get something like zopiclone to help you sleep. By taking it for a week or 2, it can help you get back into the normal routine of sleeping.

I developed insomnia November 2016 and had 3 months of hell with it. Couldn't think of any reason for it. Tried all the sleep hygeine tips, 2 weeks of zopiclone... Built up a tolerance to them. Many GP visits until was told about an antidepressant with mild sedative properties (mirtazapine). Gp's prescribe it off label for insomnia. GP prescribed them and slept ok from the first night. Mild or severe depression can give you insomnia and insomnia can give you depression! I'd see the GP and see what they say.

I went to sleep at 11pm last night and was wide awake at 1.30am. Tossed and turned before getting up for a 12 hour shift. It was a long day but I’m hoping I sleep like a log tonight.
