I'll never forget a close relative dieing in agony from cancer who said if he could walk to the window he'd jump out of it, it is a high rise hospital.

Perhaps it gives other relatives/friends a chance to see, and reflect on, mortality.
I would agree with euthanasia if that is the chosen way for an elderly person.
However, I was given the last rites in 1975 due to not being expected to encephalitis. Had my family taken the option at the time, then I would not have been able to pay my taxes for the last 40+ years.
Take the time to say goodbye, and ask if there is anything you can do on their behalf after they have gone .

d cancer one day soon, dad went a day after his 60th birthday. Hands had to be strapped to the bed to stop him pulling all the cannula and stuff out. Not a nice way to see him go. Sounds bizzare but i was relieved for him when he took his last breath. 10 years he fought that.
