Hello HRl ,in gym lost grip on a powerful spring bar thing lost my grip as it sprung back it must have forced my thumb back with it..I became a google professor of thumb sprains,,,its basically called Skiers thumb,,when they fall over pole presses thumb back ,not broke ,saw hand therapist no real damage mind you have a funny lump now, think its where the tendon or ligament stretched,,but a very frustrating injury thats for sure
I have much the same after falling on my left thumb almost two years ago. There was an audible crack but it's been X-rayed and wasn't broken. Nothing more can be done, but strength is almost all back and I can use the thumb as normal, but I'm often aware of an ache and, as you say, a lump on the tendon.
Just as I was learning to play the piano too.
It is amazing how often you can bash your thumb on something and set back the healing process - I even managed to stub it on a door jamb

I had that when I was a teenager. I took a corner a bit fast on my Fantic Cabellero, and slid into a wall. My thumb got bent back, and it took over a year to regain any real strength in it. It did recover though, and doesn't appear to have any very long term effects.
I wish I still had that Fantic, they go for shedloads now!

I did it to both thumbs on a dry ski slope many years ago.
Took a couple of months to recover. The first few days I needed both hands just to lift a cup up and was drinking pints through a straw as it was easier
I did my left thumb on the dry slope in 1983. Once it settled down was fine but now it gets really painful when opposing my thumb and fingers- which makes some tasks a bit awkward, i guess its getting a bit arthritic after all this timeTook a couple of months to recover. I did something similar to my left thumb. It gets better as the weeks go past and then it flares up again.
I am using a thumb support - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thumb-Brace-Support-Spl... - when indulging in any activity that might irritate it. I don't wear it all day. I can't type with it though.
At £4 it might be worth a try.
