How simple is the Alta Fitbit? is phone interactivity key?

need to get one for a parent who is very technical challenged.

Flex 2 just seems a bit too basic, in that it doesnt give you any info really.

On the alta can you simple tap the screen to see how many steps you have taken/calories burned etc.

Pretty simple and easy to use. Do they have a Smartphone to link it to?

no they dont have a smartphone. and doubt have the capabilities to use one!

i wouldnt want the fitbit to be dependent on the smartphone link, hence not sure on the Alta.

it would be best if all the stuff can be got from simply tapping the fitbit screen/display

I've got a Charge 2 and can tap through the screen to view steps taken, heart rate, distance walked, stairs climbed, and minutes of exercise. Might be a bit fiddly though for your parent.

I don't really see the point of a fitness tracker if you're not going to use the app. What are you hoping to achieve / measure? Maybe better off with a simple pedometer / heart rate monitor?

From what I recall, these devices can't be used until you've configured them via the smartphone app.

My mum (now 71) has had no problems with either her smartphone or the fitbit that my sister bought her for christmas.

initial syncing can be done, but can it be used independently thereafter with just the bangle itself to check things like pulse, calories, steps etc?

You can do that with the Mi Band 2.

They're pretty useless without a phone as that's where you view most the data.

My dad has a Charge 2 and no smartphone. Bluetooth adapter in his PC and he can see all his stats via fitbit.com.

Mi Band 2:

Tap 1. Time
Tap 2. Number of steps.
Tap 3. Distance in miles.
Tap 4. Heart Rate.
Tap 5. Battery Charge.

That's how mine's set up. Other data is possible e.g calories.

Guess that you can do the initial setup via your own phone, then after that all they have to do is charge it up every few days.

The fitbit devices like the Alta will do the same thing of tapping to let you see steps, heart rate, etc. Sleep tracking is primarily done via the phone/their on line services, so that is the only part that won't work.

Most of these devices will have relatively limited internal storage; the fitbits will store up to 7 days data before losing anything.
