Morning all

I wondered if someone could critique my self imposed diet that I've dreamed up. I'm 19st, but have lost about a stone in the month since I started it. I've got a half marathon next Sunday and another in October, with a few 10ks and the odd park run plan. I'm looking to beat my PB next weekend but "cut" enough to smash it in October as it is a flat course (Bruges). Wife is on slimming world and is a bit of a genius with the dinners it has to be said, something varied and filling every night.

I do intensive, superset, no rest strength training four times a week and at the moment in preparation for the half I run 6 miles twice a week, I'm happy with this as it has served me well in the past. I also cycle deliberately hard (take the mountain bike rather than the racer, keep high gear) 6 miles a day to get to the station and back.

My diet is thus:

Breakfast

Protein shake (one 35g scoop with water, pure whey)

Lunch

Protein shake as above
Bag of sugarsnaps
Slimming World Hummus

Snack

Protein shake as above

Dinner

Always "free" or max 4 "syn" SW dinner, once a week treat of a chicken shish kebab with chilli sauce, but leave the pitta. SW dinners are generally high in protein by design and have a lot of veg.

Before bed

Casein protein shake with water

Before workout

Preworkout gel

After workout

Protein shake as above

One night a week I'll have perhaps half a bottle of scotch and a couple of beers, but not every week and not always that amount.

It is working in terms of losing weight, inches and maintaining muscle but I'm worried I may die.

Any advice appreciated!

smile

You must be starving??

I'd cut the booze and protein powder and eat lean clean foods avoiding simple carbs, processed food and aim hit your macros through diet.

Download myfitnesspal and monitor your food/exercise via that aiming to eat 500 calories under your BMR.

People will be along to tell you shortly that you have to many protein shakes, and that you shouldn't drink your calories etc etc.

But- high protein, low fat/carb diets work wonders for fat loss. Providing you're on a calorie deficit, and you can maintain it for the duration- it'll work well.

I was for the first week or so and now I'm kind of used to it - if anything I've conditioned myself to really look forward to dinner, which fills me up. Don't really have cravings for crisps/chocolate etc which in the past have always been my downfall. I know the booze is very counter productive, but I look forward to that night too.

What do you mean by "hit macros"?

Cheers pal. On Myfitnesspal I'm averaging about 1700 calories a day - which is what it reccomends to lose a pound a week. i'm not really losing that as I think I'm gaining some in my muscles, but trousers and shirts etc are definitely feeling bigger and where I was normally bloated, my (still overhanging) beergut is quite flabby.

Cheers for input guys.

There's loads of ways to diet, everyone has their preference- what's important is A) Is it working well? B) Can you maintain it?

If yes to both, keep doing it IMO

You’ve got no fats in there! Eat some nuts and avocados. Mind you, that’s probably the least of your worries as it really doesn’t look balanced or sustainable.

This.

Plus, unless your dinner is packed with wholegrains, vegetables etc., there's very little fibre or indeed vitamins/minerals in that diet.

Without going into details, I'm assuming you don't have a particularly great relationship with the toilet on this diet?

Good advice, I'll add some avocados. I pronounce them av-ok-a-dohs, and enjoy nuts. I think the dinners are quite balanced, for example last night was a burrito full of mincemeat, veg, yoghurt, quinoa and peppers etc, with the wrap part being an omlette. Was epic.

Without going too graphic, been mostly water out of both tunnels for the last two days, hence me wondering if death is indeed imminent.

Cheers again!

Definitely not sustainable, but it will work if weight loss is your goal.

Good advice. What will be the symptom of it reaching the end of its sustainability - illness?

Holy crap! Eat some porridge or something before it’s too late.

If you're stting water, then I'd say it's probably time to do something more sustainable......

Not just yet, it can be lingering......

(as others have suggested, it's not sustainable)

Nope..... eat any Easter eggs you've purchased in the next two hours.... it's already to late I'm afraid biggrin.....

I've sustained a similar diet for a fairly long period, it can get you very lean..... but if it's not sitting well with your internals, then drop out one or two protein shakes, replace with something more tangible. Try to keep calories the same and the fat loss should continue.

I eat a lot of protein via shakes, more than you do, but I think you have to build up a bit of a tolerance, or it can cause havoc with digestion.

Cheers pal. i'll have a regig, add some good fats and some fibre to the mix and see if things get better.

Much obliged all!
