Medically assisted death- a Canadian couple

In Canada where I live there are fairly liberal laws in this area. I understand the ethical issues and care must be taken but I would not hesitate to avail of this option in the event of a long painful and ultimately fatal disease. A very personal decision but the couple in the article were very clear-eyed realists.

In the years to come the refusal to permit you the time and choosing of your own demise will seem as deranged as slavery does now.

If I'm still denied it when it's time to cark it I'll simply shop elsewhere.

It was quite a while coming in Canada, but not much controversy about it now. The obvious concerns are about someone else deciding if the person is (for instance) an Alzheimer's victim, particularly if there is an inheritance.

However, the law in such cases does not permit a third party decision.

Thus it is important around the time of drafting a will to be very clear on intentions and to leave a living will on such things. I have a living will with my doctor and lawyer which clearly outlines my intentions, such as DNR, and I did this when I was 40. More interested n the quality of life than a painful and unpleasant existence. I fully respect those who for religious or moral issues make different decisions, but it is good to have the choice.
