Anyone lend advice on mud runs/obstacle courses?
Discussion
Afternoon PH'ers. A little back story to give some context to my question, the middle of last year I developed Psoriatic Arthritis in my knees, arms, feet, hands etc. which crippled me. I was fortunate enough to get a great specialist and by the turn of the year I was walking and running a bit, last couple of months I have been back playing 5 a side football and some 11 a sides which I used to play regularly - so I went through a period of around 6 months where I did no exercise at all. I also got a lot of free support from Arthritis Research UK - so I decided to start paying some of that kindness back to them by signing up for the Nuclear Race 12km on 20th May and collecting for charity. I have a buddy who is going to do it with me to help.
Anyway, I am 43, play football once or twice a week again - I have a completely changed diet three healthy meals a day, no snacking, fruit/veg etc. and take Turmeric and Omega 3 supplements along with the medication to control the disease so food wise I think I am in a good place. My questions(s) are:
1. Anyone done these type of mud runs/obstacle courses before and can give any good advice about tackling them on the day
2. Anyone give any advice on some good training tips between now and May 20th - I am a little concerned I am not out pounding the streets at the moment and only playing sport once or maybe twice a week
Thanks in advance.

You'll be fine.
I done tough mudder and did no training whatsoever for it and made it round fine. I found that due to waiting time at the obstacles there was plenty time to rest and it meant you weren't really consistently running for more than a mile or two at most.
I'm not sure on the specifics of the one you're doing but my advice would be not to overthink it, just go and enjoy the day.

Super thanks, that was kind of my thinking when I signed up, I just had a bit of a wobble today with my confidence and wanted to make sure no nasty surprises were awaiting me!I done tough mudder and did no training whatsoever for it and made it round fine. I've done quite a few over the year including the Nuclear race 3 times (planning to do the May one too although ive not organised it yet).
You dont need to be that fit to do it. A bit of upper body strength can help but there are plenty of people about and everyone helps each other if you struggle on an obstacle.
Tips
Wear running leggings (I got a lot of leg scratches last time just wearing shorts), you can wear shorts over the top. Wear technical tops (not cotton!)
I wear cheap rubber palmed builder/gardening gloves to protect my hands and provide a little extra grip
Trail running shoes are a good investment if you think you will use them again
Make sure your laces are tight enough - lots of people lose footware in the first bit of deep mud. Bit of duck tap can help
if its hot make sure you drink enough before as there isn't a lot of water stops
The whole day is good fun but like anything with a lot of people its busy so get there early so you dont have to rush

Thanks again!
I have a pair of lightweight Nike running trainers, I plan to try use them and throw them away once I am done. Good idea on the tape, I am worried about them coming off! I wear compression leggings when I play football (have to with my knee issues!) so have plenty of those kicking around.
I am booked into the 10:40am wave, so hopefully there wont be too much traffic in front, if anything I am likely to be holding others up!
