Anybody currently taking either or both of the above?
Weighing up my options as I'm starting to lose a lot of hair on my crown..
Probably will just end up coming to terms with it but interested to get the opinions of those who are treating baldness.

Do some Google research and you'll find the majority of men who've been on finasteride wish they'd never done it. The main issue being it messes with your hormones and 'most' guys report a long term absence of libido with a dose of ED for good measure, even years after discontinuing.

Even Saw Palmetto, an innocent supplement, is a DHT blocker weaker than finasteride, can have the same side effects but don't last as long after discontinued use.

Yes it does seem to be very hit and miss. I guess the sooner I accept it is what it is, the better.

I use finasteride. I have used it for 10 years. I started about a year after I first noticed a bald spot. My father went bald in his mid 20s. I’m 37 now with hair.

I was buying it online and in Andorra when I lived near there. It was expensive. I asked my GP in this country and he gives a prescription to two other men in the same village. One guy had been on the stuff for years longer than me. I get 28x5mg tablets for £6 with the private prescription.

It’s easy for others to say embrace it but I have a fat head and would look stupid without hair. So my advice is ask gp first. He/she may write you a private prescription.

Part of me sympathies (I suspect I wouldn't suit a No 1 either, but lucky to have a full head of, albeit one I don't necessarily like 100%), but accept it is a tough one. Do something about the fat head and embrace the shave. You can't keep trying to cheat the system without it being increasingly creepy/embarrassing/futile, plus expensive.

Similar advice would got to the OP. Waste your money on other things!

I felt like I was too young in my 20s to be sporting a skin head. In all fairness I had no issues with the drug. Last year I had about 6 months of hives but it was unrelated. It was completely hideous. I stopped all medication and had a strict diet. Nothing worked, then one day I woke up with no hives. I’ve since not gone back on the finasteride but I’ve been tempted to return to it recently.

I took minoxidil for a while several years ago and it did appear to work -- as I went to America frequently it was much cheaper in Walmart. Occasionally I would get a mild reaction and have a sore scalp. You have to be committed and be aware that as soon as you stop it pretty much reverses within a short space of time.

In the end though I just gave up and shaved my head and I feel much much better.

10 years, fair play. Any chronic side effects?
And what is a private prescription?

No side effects noticed at all. I’m not sure if private prescription is the correct term for it but basically my gp said he couldn’t give it to me for free (I live in Wales). He said I’d have to pay for it. He rang the pharmacy for me and they confined it would be £6.XX. One box is approx 4 months supply. Infinitely cheaper than online suppliers.

I'm assuming you take half or quarter a tablet a day?
Will probably do a couple of months trial of it and see how it goes..

Sorry for late reply. 1/4 a day is what I’ve been doing. I don’t think there is any harm in trying for a little while.
