Daughter ill for over a year.
Discussion
My 12 year old has been ill for around 15 months.
She had glandular fever.
She tested positive for this.
This lasted a couple of months.
Since then she has had a skightly upset stonache or slight headache nearly every day sibce.
She’s had an mri which was fine.
Although not with the dye.
She then tested negative for lyme disease, thyroid, glandular fever.
She also has a slight visual disturbance occasionally, seeing droplets in her vision.
She got prescribed with glasses, that don’t seem to help.
She saw a neurologist who ruled out migraine.
An eye specialist said she had slightly enlarged optic nerves.
The neurologist said not a problem.
She has now been told it could be stress
(Family death and death of friend during last 2 years.
And parents sepeated).
Reccomended to see a psycologist and take up meditation!
She’s as happy and content as any 12 year old girl.
She lives with her motherin france.
Her mother took 3 mo ths to go for blood tests when told to do so,
It’s more than 2 months since she said she’d take my daughter for another eye test.
Stress? Tosh.
Anyone known anything similar?
She has dual citizenship, so i am hoping she can see a doctor here an get some tests.
Lots of symptoms, 15 months unwell.
After a partial mri, and a couple of blood tests testing for half a dizen things, it sounds like they have no idea so put it down to stress.
Her mother seems happy with this.

The glandular fever part is quite confusing.
As test are never 100% accurate.
From what i understand the WHO have said that it does not reoccur.
Although i guess it could have caused longer lasting issues.
The problem with the mother is more one o not pulling her finger out and doing the test etc quickly, rather than a keeness to go to the doctor or hospital.
I am quite sure it isn't attention grabbing by my daughter.
The enlarged optic disc etc would surely point to something real.
I looked up enlarged optic nerve and came up with
pailledema.
nausea, headaches, visual disturbances, decreased long sight, swollen optic discs due to pressure in optic never caused by pressure in brain or spinal cord.
All those symptoms fit.
And she has been told to f`ing mediate.

A pal of mine from school had glandular fever at 16. It laid him low for 3 to 4 years. Blurred vision and headaches with stomach upset were a few of the longer lasting symptoms. It can be very pernicious. Good luck.
Daughter of a customer of mine had something similar, it was pretty much impossible to diagnose anything and they even went to the lengths of ripping out their heating system as they thought it might even be symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.Main symptoms were headaches, illness and some localised hair loss. It vanished as it appeared a few years later, gradually and seemingly without cause. Luckily the kid was very studious and succeeded with home schooling as it occurred through the 14-16/17 year old period.
Good thing was no long lasting damage but it was an incredibly difficult period for the whole family. No one wants to see a child ill.

Could actually be stress. The enlarged optic discs are sort of a worry.
Coincidence?
Why assume it’s something like stress, when part of the optic nerve is abnormal?
I also forgot some weight gain, that also occurred at the start, which also goes with the cobdition i mentioned above.
So 5 of the symptoms and tne physical anomalie of the optic discs.
I have arranged to see an optician on friday, to show him photos that were taken by the french eye doctor.
Apparantly he should be able to tell me if he suspects papilledema or similar.
If so, i’ll push for my x to get a 2nd opinion.
When my x made tne appointment with the french neurologist, i told her to note down all the symptoms day by day.
I went with them to see the neurologist.
My x hadn’t done what i said.
The neurologist said she thought it eas migraine, and tnat we should write all tne symptoms down day by day and come back in a month!!!
We did however say that it was every day.
A month later they went back to see the neurologist and presented the symptom diary.
The neurologist said it can’t be migraine as it’s happening every day!
Ffffffffffffffs!
Not impressed.
Just to add.
The french eye doctor referred us to tne neuroligist because tne papilles (optic discs) were ill defined.
Papilledema presents as blurred edges//surrounds of tne optic discs.
So absolutely e erything points to papilledema, and she’s been diagnosed as having stress.

You're obviously very worried. I'm assuming when you say your daughter had an MRi it was a scan of the brain and showed nothing out of the ordinary? IF there was something there wouldn't there be a raft of other symptoms as well? The fact the neuro didn't use dye or request a lumbar puncture would suggest they think there's really no need. Pressure on the brain can do a lot more than cause mild headaches. Loss of balance, seizures etc are common.
I'd suggest letting your daughter have a chat with a counsellor/psychologist. Good luck.

The cause dorsn’t have to be in tne brain.I'd suggest letting your daughter have a chat with a counsellor/psychologist. Good luck.
It can be in tne spinl column, which was not scanned.
As for other symptoms...she has just about all of them for papilledema....especially the ill defined optic discs...a tell take sign.
Yes, i am worried, and feeling pretty helpless.
All symptoms point to a condition that even with mild symptoms, can result in vision loss in a few days.
I am so upset that my x has taken months to take my daughter for blood tests, and even more months to see an eye doctor.
Fine to see a pstcologist.
I just don’t want my daughter to go blind in the meantime because of a lack of urgency/takng it serious.
Thanks.
