So I’ve been on Fentanyl for near 7 years now. I was medically discharged from military for spinal injuries and nerve damage and was not long after placed on Fentanyl. It was 25mcg patch I was on for five years and then I cut down to 12.5mcg. Been on that dose for 2 years now. Basically I’m so fed up with it ruling my life and walking around in a constant daze. Over the past year my addiction has gotten worse. You are supposed to change patch every three days but I was putting new one on every two days and I’m in a place where I don’t feel normal unless I take my 30/500 co-codomol in morning along with my Lyrica. All legally prescribed. I take Fentanyl, co-codomol, Lyrica, robaxin muscle relaxers and mirtizipane for depression and insomnia. I’ve been off Fentanyl for two days now and my pain levels are no worse. Though I feel awful. It’s like a deep body ache all over, headaches, flu like symptoms and overall feeling rather crap. Over the course of a year I’ve managed to get down to only taking one co codomol per day. I’ve cut Lyrica down to 50mg per day and aiming to come off it altogether.

Just so so tired of these drugs ruling my life. I get blood work every six months and my liver and kidneys are 100% fine. Blood work looks good. But I’m now on the wait for TRT as my testosterone levels came back at just under 4. I’m into bodybuilding and now finding that my pain levels without the drugs are not as bad as they use to be. Just really feel I’ve been feeding an addiction.

Anybody else been through the process of coming off these medications?

Hi mate, sorry to read you're having a tough time of it. Basically you're going through an Opiate withdrawal and that's not pleasant. I came off huge doses of Morphine after a near fatal car crash. I reduced my dose and moved over to Buprenorphine, which I found much easier to reduce and stop all together.

Are you liaising with your GP?

Now going into day 5 and I now feel fine. Mind feels more sharp and for some odd reason, my spinal issues are not hurting that bad at all. I am getting cravings for that feeling of when you put new patch on and you start to feel that warm comfortable wave come over. The craving rather scares me.

Unfortunately it's those cravings that can take people back to using Opiates. They feel nice. I would engage with your doctor and/or local drug agencies for support. You may be feeling OK now but it takes longer than a few days for the body to adjust.

Can't really add much but I hope the process goes well.

Glad the workouts are helping and you have the opportunity to reduce or get off completely.

It'll be bad for about a month. I went through serious withdrawals from an opiate I used constantly for a couple of years - nothing like fentanyl I imagine though. Can you do any exercise? It was exercise that helped me more than anything, oh and the return of my sex life!

Been off now near two weeks and I feel a good bit better. Mind is sharper, fatigue during day is mostly gone, insomnia has reduced a good bit and overall feeling more balanced. I did get migraines last week and came home early from work as it got really bad. Read that migraines do happen with withdrawal. One note though, is that my sex drive has really increased. About 7 days off the Fentanyl I started waking up with morning glory, something that had not happened in a while. So I researched about that and found medical studies showing long term opioid use and in particular Fentanyl caused androgen degradation in near 70% of patients. They were figures of really low testosterone. I was tested as having very low testosterone about six weeks ago and just waiting on endocrine appointment to start TRT. Will be interesting to find out what my hormone levels are.

One aspect that is bothering me is the craving of wanting that feeling. I feel I want to put a patch on the get that warm glow so to say. I’m not going to do such a thing and handing patches back to the pharmacy.

Well done!

Craving will subside but it takes time. My advice would be to avoid any Opiate based medication from now on. It simply isn't worth risking relapse for.

Thanks

I’ve managed to stay down at one 30/500 kapake per day. Going to ask doctor about lowering my Lyrica to aim towards coming off. Only take 100mg per day but rather not be on it. I fully accept that I will have spinal issues but my lower back is not hurting as bad as I thought it would. In fact, I have less deep aches with being off Fentanyl.

Most of the codeine from the kapake (co-codamol) will be lost when the drug is metabolised in the liver. IIRC less than 10% of the codeine makes it as morphine into the system. A tiny amount. You'll probably miss the paracetamol more! Personally I'd stay on the Lyrica for a bit and just deal with it later - as you say it's not much.

Doing rather well. Off Fentanyl now for a month and going strong. Best thing was coming off it. Moods better, not extreme tiredness as much during the day and feeling more focused. Just need to get my TRT sorted next.
