Wisdom teeth, gum overlap with smell and removal

Twice I’ve had a serious sore gum and infection around my lower left wisdom tooth where it kind of overlaps at the back and connects to my cheek. There is like an excess flap of gum like it’s swollen. Sometimes it swells up a little bit and other times nothing. Over the last 10 years I’ve either had antibiotics and or/that tobacco like stuff placed in there on those two server occasions or I dealt with it with Corsodyl and warm salt water and bonjela myself at other times before it got too bad.
I regularly notice a bad smell from that gum area if I use a clean finger or a cotton bud to collect a saliva sample and sometimes I feel like I can notice it on my breath and my partner notices it too. Although I try not to do this too often.
My dentist was reluctant to do anything and now a new dentist has referred me to hospital, where I’m waiting for an x-ray. I’ve just made an appointment with a dentistry for you clinic who’ve said they’ll remove the tooth and to bring the x-ray. It just seems to me they take a blanket removal stance without seeing the tooth? Or am I just worrying and they’ll asses on the day? Anyone had any similar experiences or work in dentistry? I trust my dentist but this whole procedure and the fact it took 20 phones calls to get through from a letter stating they’ve won the contract to provide oral surgical treatment makes me a little apprehensive.

Is the tooth below the gum level - i.e. would a dentist be able to get hold of it to get it out?
If not, it’d likely be a hospital job to dig it out.
Either way, you’ll be far better off with it out of there. Repeated infections really aren’t good and things could get serious at some point. Wisdom teeth really are pointless things.

I had a wisdom (lower) and was booked into hospital on the day I'd gone moaning into my dentist. It f ached like hell. I wasn't happy because my sis had a few years earlier had a wisdom removed in hospital. Her tale was not nice. She still suffers from aching jawbone.
As I was at the receptionist's desk a lady dentist appears and says to my dentist 'can I look at the x ray?' She was a specialist who attended the clinic twice a month for special areas of teeth work. I stood there as she went off to look. She came back down the stairs and says 'my patient has not turned up. I think I can remedy your problem. Can I do it?' I thought 'hospital and mouth clamped or whatever they do... 'Yes!' I said.
Took a while. She 'drilled' it all out!' Never again, but it worked.

Spoke to my dentist who advised that they try to speed up the process and to bring the x-ray with me on the day and they'll assess and progress from there. Still nervous about having it done, but put a cotton bud on the gym this afternoon and could smell it, a few hours after brushing my teeth. It sees that build up of gum is just a warm, moist harvest for bacteria.
