Struggle to sleep in complete silence. Have to open the windows so I can hear the trees rustle but then woken at 6am by the noisey bin men. Like the sound of a fan in the background but my missus complains it's too noisey so turn it off. Considering getting some headphones to listen to white noise being played but not sure I could sleep with headphones.

Anyone else struggle with silence?

When we had that hot spell recently, I must admit I found it easier to sleep with the fan going. Perhaps use some headphones and use the white noise app? I’ve used it a few times and it does help.

Have run a fan as white noise generator for at least 6/8 years...

Makes all the diiference, plus i enjoy the air movement.

I feel your pain. I'm a really light sleeper, so much so that a mouse sneezing a mile away wakes me up.

It doesn't help that a new neighbour has moved in the flat downstairs who isn't too bad however his girlfriend has now just moved in and she doesn't seem capable of being in the flat without playing loud crappy music at all hours of the day/night, so loud in fact that it vibrates through the bedroom floor.

She also has a large dog with her that barks/yelps/whines constantly whenever they go out. The worst incident so far is when they went out one weekend leaving the dog barking the whole time before finally coming back at 1am and you guessed it started blasting loud music as soon as they were in the door grrr.

Yep I feel your pain. I’ve found a radio station that really helps, Sleep FM. Not only does it help us drift off quicker, if either of us wake we rarely struggle to get back to sleep whilst it’s on low.

Maybe worth a try?

fk that. I couldn't live in a flat for this very reason. Apart from the mad cow next door that goes out in the garden at 11pm talking to the hedgehogs its pretty quiet. I find the echo dot playing chillout music on a timer helps nod me off.

I sometimes use an app called Sleep Pillow. Whole bunch of sounds from white noise to wind chimes. Whales, owls, thunder storms, rain patter, windy trees, aircraft cabin etc. etc. etc.

Also has an optional sleep timer. I’m sure other similar apps are available.

Me and the OH had been talking of moving sometime next year anyway and i'm trying to convince him that an actual house is better than a flat for many reasons besides noise pollution.

I stay in hotels whilst away with work

So lots of new noises etc

I find the iPlayer playing local radio is good to send you into a coma

Tonight’s phone in is about funny shaped fruit and veg you’ve seen

First on the line we have Malcolm from bland town who is calling in about a courgette he saw whilst on holiday in Luton

I use an old android phone and some fairly small earphones that allow me, with a little practice, to sleep on my side in relative comfort, and I either play brown noise (via an app called Chromadoze) or some chill music (I find music by 'Steve Roach' particularly good for this) depending on my mood etc. Used this for years, swear by it. I used to think I was weird but apparently a lot more people do this than I realised.

Same here. Helps drown out other noises that tend to wake me up - like crows.

I do have cotton wool balls in my ears too though. Seems to be a perfect combination.

5 live for me. Leave it on for a couple of hours until I've dozed off; fortunately I'm like a log once I'm asleep. I've tried many other things but they all hold my interest too well - unlike Radio 5. biggrin

Just get this OP. Can put it close to you on low-ish volume and shouldn’t wake the missus. It’s great. One of the sounds is rain which is great.
