Woken up at 1AM Saturday by bad stomach ache. Difficult to describe, not the kind I’d associate with something I’d eaten but much worse than stomach cramp. Couldn’t find a comfortable position, certainly couldn’t sleep. Nurofen lessened it slightly and I finally got to sleep around 6:30 and woke up at nearly 10 feeling tired but otherwise fine.

I’d had some fish and chips on Friday evening that might have been something to do with it, but I hadn’t felt quite right all day. A couple of times I felt overpoweringly nauseous, dashed to the bathroom thinking I was just in time, but nothing came up. I was retching, to all intents being sick, but with nothing coming up except a few tiny pieces of fish the second time.

Anyone had something similar?

Gallstones.

A mate has the same symptoms and is waiting for key -hole surgery.

Sounds like gallstones, I suffered badly with them a few years ago. I found that if I forced myself to drink a couple of pints of water I was then able to throw up and this eased the pain considerably. My doctor suggested buscopan taken as soon as the cramp started. It took almost 2 years for my appointment for surgery to come through, by that time I realised that I hadn't had any symptoms for at least 6 months. The surgeon suggested that it wasn't really worth the risk of surgery so it was cancelled.

Probably gallstones as mentioned already. May be ulcer too.
Greasy food sets both off.
Avoid all fat as much as possible if it's gallstones.
On a side note, don't use nurofen/ ibuprofen when you have stomach issues as its bad for your stomach. Paracetamol (which has its own issues but mainly around how lethal it is in an overdose situation for your liver)

Possibly:-

Either Gallstones OR, more likely inflammation of the gall bladder, which can be treated with a course of anti biotics.

You will probably need an ultrasound scan to be sure.

Thanks for all the advice.

Why is a gall bladder inflammation more likely than stones?

I think we're jumping on the gall stones band wagon a bit soon, potentially. Help us by telling us the location of the pain? Upper/lower quadrant, left or ride side? DIffuse? etc etc

Entire abdomen as far as I recall. From just under the ribs to around the navel and all across from left to right.

generally atypical of gallstones then like everyone jumped on immediately rolleyes That's not to say it isn't, but plenty of other things it could be.

You need a proper assessment where you give a proper history if the pain. It could anything from a msk injury, to hiatus hernia or gallbladder through to a pulmonary embolism. Don’t try and get a diagnosis here, see you doctor.

Go and see your Dr. It could well be gallstones, the link with fatty food points in that direction, but it could be a number of other things, so get checked.

My wife had a gallstone a few years ago and any fat would bring on an attack. The pain she had would start under the ribs and radiate like a band around her entire midsection. The last attack she had, before having her gall bladder out, needed a hospital stay and morphine to bring it under control.

As already said, don't use ibuprofen, it will irritate your stomach.
