I am finding it hard to get into a gym and be motivated to train without a competition to aim towards in the future, after coming from competing at Olympic Lifting and having a few injuries, torn cartilage, t12 compression fracture and shoulder impingement, plus carrying extra timber!

So trying to find a new sport that won't compound the injuries and may help me lose the extra baggage, darts is not an option biggrin

Road cycling was the answer for me, similar age and overweight I bought myself a decent bike and to be honest I haven't looked back infact I've found it a little addictive! You are exercising the second you leave the house until you return, you can monitor your progress accurately via one of the latest cycling computers. It's low impact, burns a lot more calories than you will at the gym and rather than wondering around at the gym waiting for machines to become available you just get on with it. Get a turbo trainer for when the weather is too bad or the evenings dark and you can do it on your own but still stay intouch with your pals and local people via Strava to gauge your ability and improvement.

Cycling or swimming i'd say. Are you able to still carry on lifting weights at all, even simple lifts like the powerlifting lifts?

I can still lift and have pretty much normal function, I try and do some preventative/rehab work to keep me pinned together, the idea of competing at lifting weights is still enthusing, but lifting big weights can come with big injuries and my body is my only container for the remainder smile

I run a cycling club and have new riders 50+ joining us all the time

Older riders love it and still do well on the endurance side

Seriously, just buy a bike.

Talk to a local bike shop about what cycling is available on your doorstep (IMHO off road is safer - motor vehicles squish cyclists) and get them to recommend a suitable starter bike and crash helmet.

That and/or get a dog!

How's that even viable as regular exercise?

We have 5 groups on ability in our club, the beginners only need to ride 30 miles at an 13mph average, which is pretty easy standard to get to
