Isn't this one of those statements that doesn't like something for the sake of it? 1 in 500-1000 babies are born each year due to completely avoidable circumstances and not every birth is the result of careful planning.https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-6279419...
As stated, bread is hardly a natural product growing on trees.
It probably will inevitably give rise to the usual loons who claim it's a food additive version of chem-trails for the lizards to keep us subservient but apart from that I can't really see the downside?

the bread and food i buy is as natural as possible and I would like to keep it that way. How do you know that adding folic acid doesnt cause issues 50 years down the line? why stop there in that case why not add everything to it? As stated, bread is hardly a natural product growing on trees.

yes its avoidable so take a folic acid supplement its not difficult - i wont be pregnant any time soon so i dont need or want it.
I think you are over reacting, folic acid is a vitamin found in green vegetables, its not like you are downing a pint of stella with your sandwich. A quick look at the ingredients list for say a Hovis White shows:
Wheat Flour (with added Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Water, Yeast, Soya Flour, Salt, Preservative: E282, Emulsifiers: E471, E472e, Flour Treatment Agent: Ascorbic Acid
I would be more concerned about how 'natural' some of the ingredients in that list are before worrying about folic acid.

Quite. Although I'd wager that Stella is a more natural product than many things we eat.Wheat Flour (with added Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Water, Yeast, Soya Flour, Salt, Preservative: E282, Emulsifiers: E471, E472e, Flour Treatment Agent: Ascorbic Acid

The long term safety is pretty nailed down given it’s added to bread and flour in dozens of other countries and has been for ages.
And also the fact that it's positively rammed down pregnant womens throats, hence the thinking behind adding it to bread. Long term safety isn't the issue here, OP likes his bread wi' nowt teken owt! (or added).SHutchinson said:

To be honest, breathing in dirty air, eating all the different foods we do, alcohol, passive smoking, lack of exercise, E numbers, not drinking enough water, eating too much and obesity, take aways etc. are more likely to have an effect on your health 50 years down the line that taking a vitamin supplement!

The driving force behind this is to limit the number of Spina Bifida births, as low levels of Folic Acid contribute/cause the condition. While it has a scale, it's crippling really to those who suffer and costs the NHS a tonne of money to look after those children. There was a fantastic documentary on the subject on the BBC a few months ago, I'd suggest you watch it.petemurphy said:

Not sure why this is directed at me? Think you should be looking at the OP.Read carefully, my point is at the OP around not worrying about the long term effects (if any) of Folic Acid supplements given you are likely to have much worse health issues to worry about.
For the record I take a high dose of folic acid each week to help with treatment of my psoriatic arthritis. Totally aware of what it is.

If the pregnant woman need supplements then I don't see why it's being foisted onto the whole population.
Perhaps more training is needed before people give birth, imo a competency test should be performed on anyone thinking about having children.
this is probably the easiest/most cost effective way of dealing with the issue. easier to make everyone add it it to bread than it is to..Perhaps more training is needed before people give birth, imo a competency test should be performed on anyone thinking about having children.
- prescribe a seperate (expensive) suppliment
- spend time/money educating all women during pregnancy.
the latter is quite important as we all know the least brightest of people tend to have a higher number of children. If it costs an extra 1-2p to add it to each loaf of mass produced sliced bread and saves hundreds of complications that potentially cost more to sort/deal with then it's a win surely?
