Hi Folks

I am a 50 year old male with short stature and never been to the gym!

I am now thinking of getting fit into shape by losing some weight and gaining muscle strength both in my arms and legs etc.

There are no gyms near where I live and online fitness would suit me to fit into my working schedule for the week.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Couch to 5k app (c25k). I’m 51 and on a repeat of week 4......and I’m not really running, more shuffling :-)

Anything but running.
Start with a simple bodyweight strength programme with some rowing or swimming. Progress to barbell lifts when you’re feeling a bit stronger.

Get fit and lose weight by running - couch to 5k as already recommended. Then do weights and stuff if you want ‘big’ muscles to impress the women/blokes/mirror (delete as appropriate)

Stronglifts 5x5 for the strength.
C25k for the running.
MyFitnessPal for the calorie tracking.

Ah the British attitude to strength training! Where the only reason to do it is to impress people because the real goal of training should be to end up weak as piss, skinny, tired and injured, which is what running brings to the table.

Hi Folks

Many thanks indeed for your advice.

Could someone recommend any good online fitness programmes for beginners?

I also need help with diet. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Diet wise you could do worse than look at the Lean in 15 books - much of the info is also on his twitter feed..
Speaking of which he (Joe Wicks - Mr. Lean in 15) also has plenty of exercise videos on line too, & a fitness DVD.

You could do far worse than the C25K as mentioned and either / both food & exercise routines in lean in 15. Plenty of people (myself included... 49, also short in stature biggrin ) have lost plenty of weight through these simple routines.

There are so many guides / methods its hard to know where to start, but going by numbers alone, C25K and Lean in 15 have been a huge success for the huge number of people that have given them a go.

Personally I'd start with a bit of core fitness before worrying about weights, but I'm sure others would disagree. Do what works for you.

Roar fitness London do online programmes, mainly weights based with diet planning. The results people are getting with them are pretty fantastic but it is not cheap.

I would recommend the original P90 program, which I think you can now get on Beachbody's online platform. You may have heard of P90X? This predates it and is far less extreme so should be a good starting program.

Stop eating stuff you know is bad...chocolate, crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc.
Go for a brisk walk every day between of 3 and 5 miles. Do some simple press ups once the weight starts falling off.

That's all you need to do. It's that simple.

You don't need a gym or online training or any special diet.

This is the best advice.
