Long term member but don’t want to reveal my identity as this is a touchy subject and a personal one.

Couldn’t post in the lounge as I’m a new member.

Long story short.

Me and her meet in August, I’m hesitant to move quick, she isn’t, makes me feel comfortable and moves us very fast, on about booking holidays, made me a key, all sorts.

Towards end of october, she gets distant, so I do as well, gently while asking her if she’s ok, end up talking about it, she thinks I’m losing interest, I say it’s the opposite, you’ve been distant, she said her life’s stressful with work, uni, etc so she focuses on that and not ‘us’. I said well tell me so I can support you through it, she says you’re righ, I’ll be more transparent.

Didn’t work, it got worse so I broke it off and said I can’t be in a half way relationship, she didn’t fight it, just accepted which made me flip as it looked like she lead me on, made me comfortable even though I was reluctant, she even said why do you have your guard up. She then came back to talk about it and said she can’t deal with a relationship right now but doesn’t want to give me up so why not start again fresh and see how it goes. I was truly fed up and happy to move on but I stupidly agreed not knowing it would make matters worse. Seeing her when she came made me fold, If I didn’t see her, it would have been different.

It was really nice for a week and she made lots of effort then went back to normal, actually, worse so I said that’s it, no more. She agreed very easily again without a fight and I heard from her friend that she said he deserves more, I wish it didn’t have to be like this.

At this point, I’m more upset and broken because after a getting glimpse of how she used to be, it made me miss her more so I went to her place after I broke it off to ask her why she did all that, she didn’t have much to say, said I’ll do it again but I can’t commit, can’t this can’t that, it’s not you so I left. Then text her the next day stupidly saying, I don’t want to give you up but I don’t want to remain friends and nothing more, there’s no comprimse, both of us are after something we can’t have, why don’t we leave it until Christmas (we’re sort of family friends so going to be at a mutual location) and see what happens, could be the last time we meet, could not be.

She text back saying sorry I hurt you, you don’t deserve it, I had to be honest, I don’t have the same feelings, I shat on us, you’re perfect, it’s my fault bla bla bla. So it became a mini argument that I kept trying to defuse until she said, our feelings weren’t matched from the start, we’re not compatible and i obviously don’t make you happy so why do you like me so much? I genuinely don’t understand.

At that point I had an epiphany so I said, you’re right, thanks for saying that because I don’t know, I’m not going to miss anything, good luck and I hope it’s not awkward at Christmas. She said okay, me too.

Now, writing that, makes me feel stupid because I’m asking for something hopeless, she’s not interested. She’s made it clear, however, after how she was just last week, when she was making the effort, I can’t help but think there’s something wrong with her and she can’t deal with her emotions or whatever it is. She says we’re not compatible but we are, it was perfect at the start, I feel like she’s making excuses, I sort of fked it up abit by going round there and talking, even though I didn’t swear, beg or plead. I was just asking.

I’m in a lot of trouble here, I’ve never felt this down before, I have short bursts of relief then I get even sadder. I don’t like this feeling and I want to fix this. She’s close by so i don’t want to hear about her with someone else, could be 6 months from now, it’s very painful, after how we used to be, just the other day, there just be a way, a trigger.

So, these are the facts, my birthday is next week, she might text, and spark a conversation because we haven’t not spoken for longer than a week and there’s been a change in my work.

Christmas Day, we’re going to both be there.

If some of you were me, and you wanted to get her back, how would you approach this.

This is a very long message and I appreciate anybody who makes it to the end and takes the time to respond. I thank you all and even though this might not work, it certainly makes me feel better letting it out.

Thanks again.

I'm guessing you're young?

You'll get over her, she's just not that into you... Ultimately there's no point chasing someone who doesn't want to be chased.

26, the thing is, I’m not trying to chase, I’m not going to message her or anything, just want to know if there a way I can be on that day, have an attitude that will maybe make her think, hold on a second, what happened here.

She isn’t into me now, but she was just over a week ago and a month before that. I was happy to move on, honestly, I was sad but I accepted it, but when she came back, showed she wanted to try, showed me a glimpse of how she was before, it’s just ruined me, I’ve lost all composure, I know it’s easy to say get over it, but to me it isn’t, I need to know if there’s a way

I tortured myself for years trying to make something fairly similar work. 12 years!!!

Total waste of what should have been best years of my life. Most of my 20s into early 30s.

Cut your losses now and save yourself from similar pain. You will have moved on in a few months for sure but make that break

Get someone to coach you like a life coach or hypnotherapist, this possibly boils down to a gap in your self esteem. Believe me there are sooooo many more worthy people out there for you. There are many odd ones out there and you cannot fix them.

At 17-20 ish I was with a girl who squashed me from confident to nowt, after we broke up it took me 12 months to get back to an arrogant ego mo fo and I look back and hate how she controlled me and made me feel like I did not deserve her or anyone, I was scared that if she left I would miss her and see her happy with other people, I laugh now but it can consume your thoughts.

She's not into you. Whatever facade you can construct for a day, a week, will only be that - a front. As soon as you go back to being yourself this situation will resume.

Every response above mine is on the money, and I'd suggest that most of them (including myself) have been in your position. Be polite, be friendly and pleasant but maintain a distance and branch out. There is always someone else, no matter how hard it is to hear at the time. Being happy and having some self-confidence is its own aphrodisiac.

Best of luck. It's a crap time of year for it but get yourself to some Christmas parties and focus on enjoying yourself if that's your thing. If you get to show someone new your sleigh bells chalk it up as a bonus!

You're young (clearly) - women make little sense much of the time/change their minds/are rarely happy with anything/will get bored quickly/want someone to blame for everything.......

Rinse and repeat throughout life.

You have all this to look forward to !

Good point Robert.

So many times a woman will say..."I am just not ready for a long term relationship" they dump you and then go on to have a 5 year love affair.....complex beasts

Yes Mr Reece, you are clearly young. And as evidenced above, silly to ask advice as you'll undoubtedly get the odd sage and their one-size-fits-all advice because y'know, when it comes down to it you can define a whole gender on a specific set of characteristics if you want - it saves actually applying thought to a situation.

Plenty more fish in the sea... move on, enjoy yourself, don't worry about it.

Edited to add, having re-read (well, skimmed for the second time), I haven't seen a reason why you want her back? Maybe I missed it?

Whatever you need to do to shift your focus onto you, and your life without her, is what you should be seeking.
It’ll be a lot harder for you to accept her being with someone else down the line if you’re not in a position where you’re happy in your life. Get started on that now and be one step ahead when the time comes.
I’ve given up, (and been given up on!,) what I thought were perfect relationships.

Also, read ‘mindset’ by Carol Dweck.

Sounds stty. Details aside I've done basically the same, all be it over longer time period and with some added long distance spell went both did a stint working overseas. Cut a long story short, spent quite a while being fairly average then broke up for good.

I was about your age, first proper relationship, absolutely gutted to the point it's changed me even now a good four-five years on, now in in a long term relationship with an absolutely fantastic girl I hope to spend the rest of my life with.

My advice is to cut your losses, either cut all ties or remain a distance as past freinds if that can work, spend time with your friends and don't underestimate how important it is to look after yourself. I'm not good at it, but get some routine and exercise, walk after work/uni, eat well, be open with those close to you.

Jeez dude, I’ve had relationships shorter than your post!

You’re 26, the world’s your lobster. If this chick’s not into you she’s not into you, nothing you can say or do will change that. Move along and don’t saddle yourself with what sounds like a nightmare.

Shouldn’t be this hard this early in the relationship. Part of you be so sad and thinking that you desperately want her back is because we always want what we can’t have. If you do win her back the cycle will continue, and trust me, the longer it goes on the worse it will be.

Been there, done that. Move on!

A lot of young women are like this. A bit insecure and jump from one man to the next, whoever shows her some interest.

You're better off walking away. She will continue to treat you like this and use you as a stop gap between other fellas. And unless there is sex involved, that arrangement is pretty naff.
