Following a week in hospital with acute cholecystitis before Christmas I had my gall bladder out on Monday. All fine, done as keyhole surgery although the surgeon commented that one of the holes "would fit a large key" - despite a low fat diet for a few weeks the gall bladder was still very swollen apparently.

However my uvula is very swollen and sore - far more so than my stomach. Short of sucking strepsils and waiting is there anything I can do to reduce the irritation / pain?

thanks in advance.

Will. I've just had the diagnosis after a week in pain. I've got antibiotics and am to be sent for an ultrasound.

How have you been since posting?

What's it like after?

I had this. No pain from the operation, absolute agony from where the anethesist rammed the tube down my throat. I had to get a course of antibiotics as nothing else was touching it.

There have been a few threads on gall baldder removal:

As you might expect the after effects vary greatly but I was back at work two days later. Obvioulsy this was after a keyhole operation as the alternative is a major procedure.

I would say the operation was a complete success. The keyhole surgery was remarkable (i still dont really want to think about how they get something as big as a gall bladder out of a hole that small) and my recovery pretty swift. I cant say Ive missed my gall bladder. Very occasionally if i go nuts - cheese after a fatty meal (lamb seems to be particularly bad, particularly curry) I get indigestion but that's about it. And compared to the pain before the op, or the restricted no fat diet they put me on between diagnosis and op, then life without a gall bladder is a breeze.

Good luck with the surgery.

My wife had her gall bladder out after having gallstones which caused pancreatitis.

Pizza and curry are fine, its only if she then has a fatty pudding as well she notices it, that said she now has less desire for fatty foods anyway.

Surgeons for a lap chole quite frequently request a nasogastric tube -through your nostril and into your stomach. Can be put in awake, but performed under GA by anaesthetists as a courtesy to the surgial side. Getting an NG tube in can be way more challenging than the intubation (only time I've had an SUI) and can involve lots of forcep work, swearing and frustration.

My throat was absolute agony for well over a week. The five holes in me never gave even the slightest twinge of pain.

Thanks for the replies.

I had a bit of a rough weekend, felt a bit better Monday morning, presumably because I knew I would speak with a doctor. However, I was prescribed penicillin and I react badly to it. I suppose it's mental but I felt like I'd been kicked around that evening. I've just got the antibiotics - two of them, three times a day - so hopefully some positive change. It says, Take after or during meals. I only have one meal a day, and even that's perfunctory.

I write for a hobby and job and my wife convinced me I should try to be productive to get my mind off things. I've just completed 500 words. I feel good, although the prose isn't magic.

Scrambled egg tonight for dinner.

I was basically advised to go fat free before the surgery so beans on toast (no butter) would be better than scrambled egg (sorry!)

Its a very bland diet! There's fat in anything tasty...

Yeah, thanks for that. I've only had a maximum of one meal a day since Tuesday last. That meal might be two slices of buttered bread (remarkably tasty after not having solid food for days) and such. When my wife, keeper of my pills, read the instructions, including the enclosed literature, I was told I had to eat something this evening. I couldn't make up my mind what I'd eat, then she suggested scrambled eggs. My mouth started watering. The smell!

There was no increase in pain. There normally is after eating.

I've reread my article. I've seen more coherent writing in bullet point lists. It was really depressing. On the other hand, when I read it I shook my head and tutted. My wife asked me what the problem was. After I told her, she said that it shows my judgment is improving. So a positive.
