UK Dental Costs £500 for one large filling

I've been having on-going dental issues see multiple dentists all private got referred to one a specialist in London, initial charge was £95 consultation and £90 for a CBCT scan. They mentioned in one tooth I need a large filling and they quoted me £500 for a large filling, that's not a typo I asked them do they have price list and never received one. I just don't understand why the UK is so expensive for a dental work ?
It should have been £155. Mental!!£500 I couldn't believe it I had to ask a couple of times as well to confirm they hadn't made an error, I'm pretty desperate at the moment to sort it but if they charged £500 for a filling I dread to see what they charged for other treatments, The practice was nice probably the nice dentists I have ever been to and latest tech but boy you pay for it, I think I was out of my depth financially with this dentist. I got the filling done at local private place in end for £98, wasn't even the cause of the issue.
A lady friend had really bad periodental disease bless her..... had periodental treatment for years
then decided enough was enough, Went to a hungarian dental practice in London for a lot of the treatment ,and twice to hungary the last trip was a fortnight.
Basically had every tooth removed and replaced with crowns and bridges etc plus some system to make sure the jaw sat right at the end of it...wish I could show you the photos she looks absoloutely fantastic and after a year has no problems at all ..no simon cowell colour either they refused to do them that shade they just look perfect...anyway all in including travel and hotel £12500......can you even begin to imagine how much a uk dentist would charge for that work I reckon £35k as a guess

I live in Indonesia.
My dental clinic is like a futuristic star ship med bay. Beatutiful reception, tea, coffee...lovely chairs. Gorgeous toilet facilities, including a shower room....not sure why.
My dentist has two assistants in with him.
I think there are six dentists in the practice, some specialising in certain areas.
I had root canal work last year - which he let me watch on a video screen as I was interested.
For the same price as I pay for a check up in UK.
Met an Aussie guy who used the same practice. Quoted around £1500 for an implant in Aus. This clinic did it for less than a third of the price. In fact he said his Aus dentist wouldn’t even quote him an exact figure..
He had told his Aus dentist he was going to Bali to have the work done instead: his dentist then basically told him he would get infected and all sort of complications.
The Bali clinic, he says, is way cleaner than his Aus dentist and has better equipment. In addition the dentist here is so confident in his work he will fly this guy back for free and pay hotel costs if anything goes wrong and the implant needs further treatment.
I met this guy as he was so happy with the service he had brought his wife for her work - £4,000 in Australia, £800 here....they were also having a lovely holiday.
The staff here even looked after our baby when I couldn’t stop her crying one day, when my wife was in having a check up. Lovely people.
I have a friend booking in for treatment here when he comes on holiday later in the year.
£500 for a filling....! I’d love to see a breakdown of that cost.

I was quoted 'about 500' to have a plastic guard made. My new dentist said I suffered from Bruxism (teeth grinding) and that I should have one.
He should me one and in no way did it look like 500 pounds of work !
As I was going to Majorca for a while got it done there by a Scandinavian dentist for a third of the price

Yeah was Harley Street but Ive been in pain since Oct 2018 so desperate, shame I just couldnt afford it I was scared of the potential bill after the filling. It was £500 standard large white filling. They werent even sure if the issue I had it done elsewhere and though it eased it a bit its not the cause. Ive decided now this cant go on anymore so on Weds this week I'm starting to have teeth pulled that could be the issue. These are teeth that have had work before but appear fine on xray, first to go will be the one next to implant with large filling and root canal. Ive really struggled to find any dentist who will help that i can actually afford. The pain isnt as bad as before it's more soreness but I find it hard to concentrate with it my work has really suffered and my mental health.l
Can't you just find whichever dentist near you is taking NHS patients currently?

t scared so need to be 'knocked out' (valium for the win!) and I've not got a natty health dentist. All in I'll be looking at £2.5k <sob>There is absolutely no need to go private. If you do, expect to pay a lot. It's a dentist FFS, not a nail bar! My Chiropractor charges £45 for a maintenance visit. I am in there for, perhaps 5 - 10 mins max, of which 2 or three minutes will be chatting about cars or watches. Now that's expensive!
Thanks for the recommendations Brakertester gave me one which happens to be about 15-20mins from me so going to try there.
I would love to do NHS but the issue is they are still not sure what the problem is, its narrowed down to 3 teeth now an implant and the teeth either side, due to the implant even if I the issue is found in one of the other teeth either side I need a dentist who does both dentistry and implant work or at least a practice who has different staff that can. The other issue is the implant is 10 years old, implants have different brands and each brand have specific fitting / adjustment tools, the brand is not used much these days so not many are tooled for it, I've not found an NHS dentist who will help due to the implant complications.

When I had my £900 root canal done it was after seeing 2 NHS dentists who both said it was beyond their expertise. Curving roots or something like that.
I then tried the place where my kids used to go. Private and NHS work done in the same premises.
The NHS dentist who was married to the Private guy also said that she couldn't do it and thus recommended her husband (Go figure).
He did an excellent job over 2 visits and no pain in the years since.
My £400 root canal done at a different dentist has been a pain ever since.
I suppose you pays your money.....

FWIW, Mrs Langtounlad has just spent ~£1,000 I then tried the place where my kids used to go. Private and NHS work done in the same premises.

on specialist root canal work that her longterm and very good dentist deemed beyond his ability. The specialist worked on her using a microscope to view his work in sufficient detail and achieve the precision required. When we asked him about the % chance of success he said, 'if I do it 95% confidence, if a non-specialist does it 45% confidence'. The procedure was a total success and took approx 3 hours in the chair over two visits + two dental nurse assistants in attendance. We came to the conclusion that he was good value for money and question the vfm by comparison of the normal dentist.
