Facial Pain/toothache

Not sure where to go with it, in agony, started about a week ago after chewing a piece of chewing gum too long I think, had also had a minor ear infection which cleared up with drops.
Got pain that comes in waves at the back of my jaw, doesnt point to a specific tooth, dentist couldnt see anything any just put something on to numb it a bit. Took an x ray of the top molars and said didnt look like there were any problems. Has given me a prescription for some toothpaste that he says will help.
Went back to the doctor on Monday who had a look and said my ear doesnt look infected, suggested painkillers and Beconase.
Any suggestions gratefully received, its stopping me sleep, cant do much, dont want to and am alternating between Ibuprofen and Paracetemol, got some CoCodamol as well but am very sparing with those.

My first thought was that it's my wisdom teeth playing up, but they're fine - but it feels like that area in my jaw.

There is a nerve that can go mental around there as well, Trigeminal Neuralgia.
I currently have it kicked in Oct last year still got it, had MRI's, CT's spent a fortune at the dentist, on treatment now which has helped but left side of face is pretty numb. Mine is atypical in that I can occasional mind blow pain but then settles to a constant low ache. Apparently episodes can last months then go and come back years later I'm trying to ride it out but it got me very depressed tbh. I'm pretty sure mine related to an implant I had fitted 10 years ago just under the big nerve, I had jaw expansion at the time were they make the bomb bigger but hammering it.
Still not sure 100 percent and its still bad but not quite as horrendous as it was, as its sudsided a bit I have noticed that one upper and one lower molar dont feel right and cause pain when manipulated which wasnt the case the other day as everything hurt.

The pain was so bad he gave me pethidine, which was about the strongest pain relief he could prescribe, but it did nothing to dull the pain. He couldn't give me antibiotics though, as they had to come from a dentist.
I finally got some antibiotics at 9am Monday and within a couple of hours the pain was gone. The dentist said toothache was either exposed nerve or abscess pressure.
Hope you find some relief soon fella. It's a horrible pain to be stuck with.

Have you got lower impacted wisdom teeth?
Could it be a TMJ sort of issue? Does it get worse as the day goes on and you're using your jaw?

Its this lower molar, the other day it was just noise in there but can certainly tell its settled into a pattern and touching that tooth, that has been filled a couple of times certainly seems like the culprit, i think I killed it with the chewing gum a couple of weeks back.
Have managed to get another appointment at 2.10, the guy I saw the other day was a bit dismissive, it seemed perfunctory.
I think if I can get that one sorted and it calms down I can see if the one above it is a problem.
Cant really do much at the moment, got some jobs to do at the weekend and cant face it, I am sure there is potentially much worse pain out there but have been lucky to avoid it but by my standards this is pretty hardcore.
Tempted to say just whip it out if they offer it but not sure down the line whether you then can get an implant put in.
Had the tooth removed, dentist said the bone had eroded underneath and it wasnt a candidate for root canal, said he may have been able to do something in situ but wasnt confident of success so I said to just whip it out, which took some doing but it came out whole. Said there was a small crack in it that might have been the problem.
Not sure if its going to solve it but that tooth has long given me agro.
Guess will find out if its made any difference in a few hours.

Well, 24 hours on and am relatively pain free, still a bit sore as can be expected after a tooth extraction and residual pain from what was going on but its subsided and the gnawing toothache has gone.
Cant tell you how much better I feel, like a massive weight has been lifted, taking it easy today but am hoping to get back onto the jobs I wanted to do tomorrow.
In hindsight that tooth has been giving me agro for years with sensitivity.

Glad you got there in the end and it's a shame the dentist fobbed you off first time then took you seriously on the 2nd visit.
Facial pain can be bloody debilitating!
It was a bit like that, two different dentists, the first, older one can be a bit dismissive and haughty but to be honest it was just noise in my mouth and couldnt work out what was hurting as everything did, the second time it was a youngish lad who was much more interested. He gave me the options and was very honest, I just couldnt face another three days of trying to manage it with over the counter pain relief, Co Codamol causes its own issues...Facial pain can be bloody debilitating!
