What made you want to start? What health benefits if any have you seen?
Best advice you can give to someone who isn’t flexible at all but wants to give it a go?

Yep, a couple of years ago, I'm mid 50s and suffer a bit from wear and tear, particularly in the lower back, took about 3 months of once a week sessions to start to feel more flexible, it has pretty much resolved my lower back issues that I thought I had for life.
I now look at is as a weekly maintenance session, I get into the gym 3 times a week and do some cv work, so an hour of lengthening the muscles again is common sense really.

I've been attempting to since the start of the year. Mostly cycled over the years so trying to increase my flexibility and balance.

It coincided with starting running again, I usually pick up a nice symmetrical pattern of injuries from being fit from cycling so being able to push harder than most people but, touch wood, its been fine this time.

Exact same thing here, but in my mid 30's I found myself in a lot of lower back pain and it got to the point where I struggled to walk around most mornings. My chiropractor, doctor, physiotherapist all couldn't do much for me but all recommended stretching more, in particular Yoga. A weekly session for a few months and I was transformed. Amazingly, I had gone from barely being able to get out of bed in the morning to being mostly fine again. It's almost like the back pain was never really there.

I recommend to everyone to do it. Even if you don't have any aches and pains then do it as a preventative measure. It's only 60-90 minutes a week and stops me from being in the pub that night too. I have recently switched to Pilates instead as it feels like more of a workout and it's a bit less hippy.

I’ve read from multiple sources it’s rrally good for you mind as well, particularly helping with depression? Would you chaps say you noticed a lift in your mood at all?

I now live right by a popular yoga centre, they also do hot yoga, think I’m going to give it a try next week week.

Not yoga, but I've been doing pilates for about 5 hyears now. With hindsight, I wish I started in my teens.

Yes, I'm 40, do weights and karate but started to feel very tight and had decreasing flexibility. Been doing Yoga, mainly at home now, for about four months, usually daily even if it's a short session and I feel MUCH better. Even something as simple as Child's Pose when done correctly is very satisfying. Correct breathing technique is very important to get the benefits. I have an eight yr old daughter who is a competitive gymnast and whilst I'm not even as remotely flexible as she is it is fun to do the exercises together and try to push myself to new places.

Problem with yoga is that if you're really Inflexible then it's horrifically painful and difficult!

Doesn’t that get easier though as you practice more?

I found that, so switched to Pilates instead. With Pilates our teacher gives us options from easy to difficult so all levels can take part easily. With yoga ( which I only lasted one session) it was lots of different named positions which everyone was doing.

I don't go to classes, but use a bunch of yoga poses in my warmups and warmdowns. Pigeon and wheel are personal favourites.

Sounds like a st yoga teacher. There are variations to suit all levels. The teacher should have suggested easier postures for you.

Whilst I don't practice yoga regularly, I do know a fair bit about it as I talk to a lot of yoga teachers and practitioners, and run workshops in yoga festivals.

Yes, my life is an assortment of lithe female lycra-clad bodies.

Yes, it makes my gf jealous.

Oh, and yes, your mind gets numb to it.

I've started doing it along with my wife. I go to the gym also, but I've found Yoga helps with joint stability a lot more. Some of the positions can hurt and take a lot of effort to hold. Good fun though.

Is Yoga with Adrienne a decent start for a beginner to do at home?

Hehe. Well, the first time I went to a yoga festival, my head was virtually spinning. The clothes left little to the imagination. Nowadays, I'm just sitting in the corner playing on my phone until it's time to deliver my workshop, then I'm off home. biggrin

Thanks to this thread I've booked a class tonight. irked
A few years ago I did a one-on-one course which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was only six or eight weeks but really felt the benefit. I just couldn't get on with the group classes though - none of the fit and lithe young fillies for me, more the overweight middle-aged types. That wasn't really the issue though, it was just so much slower and less intense. I enjoy the meditation at the end, but when others start whispering and chatting it makes it very difficult.
I'll see if/how much it's changed since then.
