I work in a mechanical role in construction, physical work, lots of walking and climbing stairs, regularly have to climb upstairs seven floors to the roof, not too out of breath at the top.

I am a big bloke, middle aged, need to lose some more weight, done well in the past but it has just frozen now. At the moment I have two slices of toasted brown bread with a banana and a coffee ( skimmed milk and sweetener ) before I set off and at lunch time I have a banana and a cup of tea.

When I get home the evening meal is something like a tin of chilli with rice, couple of waffles then a few biscuits and a couple of brews.

Zero alcohol consumption.

Is it wrong NOT to eat something during the day, if I should eat something the question is what? I really can't be bothered faffing about taking/preparing food and warming it up at lunch time. There is a canteen on the job that does a decent variety of food, would a jacket potato be a good thing to eat?

Any hints suggestions appreciated to set off losing some more weight.

No it's not 'wrong'. if that suits you then so be eat.

As for losing weight. if you're in an active/manual labour job then eat less and/or move more. calories in vs calories out.

If you want my short answer then I'd say eat less rice, and cut out the waffles & biscuits, replace it with veg and lean meat.

and for the slightly longer answer...
if that really is 100% what you eat on a daily basis then it sounds like a large chunk of your calories comes from dinner. alot of the foods you're eating are really easy to measure the calories of. Purely based off everything you've said there I would say look at how much rice, waffles and biscuits you eat cos you've not given us a quantity of how much you have. 1-2 waffles? a third, half or whole packet of biscuits?

most of what you're eating is easy to measure the calories. the bread will show you how many cals per slice, so will the tin of chili, waffles, and biscuits. get counting. as for the rice, if you're using microwave/boil in the bag stuff it will show you how many calories are in each serving/packet. if you're making your own rice then weigh it out.

writing a food diary helps. many people don't even realise all the things they eat in a day (or at night)

Eat more nuts, blueberries, avocados, garlic, ginger, and some oily fish, (not that toxic catfish the supermarkets sell
as Basa ) and you cant go wrong. Keeping off the alcohol is one of the best things you could ever do to have the
chance of keeping healthy.

Try a bigger breakfast/lunch and a smaller dinner?

if that's his routine there's no point in making him eat foods he's not interested in.

. If we are to assume everything you've been eating since now along with your activity levels has made you lose weight and you're at stall, then either exercise a little more, or cut back on the calories. the obvious thing here would be to cut back on the biscuits and waffles, and maybe the rice, it depends how much of it you eat, only you know that.

either cut it out completely, or swap it for a lower calorie alternative, or eat less of it.

bear in mind that weight loss isn't a linear decease day by day, its going to go up and down. and whislt sometimes it might not go down, it might mean other things.

I must be kidding myself about just how much I actually eat.
The biscuits are out now.

what about the waffles? are these potato waffles, or the dessert/breakfast kind?

I'd actually be really curious to see how much you eat for dinner/evening/after work. to me it seems like you eat probably well under 500cals during the day (minus teas or any butter added onto toast as i can't measure that).

a whole tin of stagg chili is 460cals.
2min microwave rice is 360cals (this is me assuming you use this). so a total of 820cals. + 500 during the day,

1320cals in a day.
this doesn't include the biscuits, waffles, or how much milk and sugars you're putting in your tea, because i don't know what you use or how much of it you eat.

I would be tempted to try a main meal at lunch time and have a light supper. Nowadays canteen meals can be pretty healthy in terms of portion size, vegetables and added salt.

Eating once a day is fine. It’s a type of intermittent fasting and I find I lose fast if I eat like that.

However it sounds like you eat a lot of starch and not much else (tinned chilli will have lots of added sugar and flour. When compared with home made). Try eating more green veg and meat, less starch, and that will help with weight loss.

fruit, bread, rice, waffles, biscuits......not really putting your body into a position where it is going to do much other than deal with the insulin you causing all day and storing what it can.

I'm Type 2 diabetic and found that since eating low carb the weight has dropped of me, issue is now getting some back on!
From what you have written it sounds like you do not actually eat enough!!!!!!! As said you need to keep an accurate diary.

Try low carb - keto etc for a few weeks, bit more effort in the prep but worth it.

if you do a simple google search on the calorific and fat content of your dinner you get this:

Tin Chilli (Stagg Chilli for example) Calories 520 and fat 20g
150g cooked rice Calories 180 and zero fat
Waffles x2 580 calories and 30g fat
Additional calories for anything you put on the waffles
Biscuits (say choc digestives) x 3 calories 250 and fat 12g

So this adds up to 1530 calories and 62g fat just for dinner. Also it means you're not eating anything green, certainly no where near your 5 a day. This is a pretty high fat high sugar diet.

Here's a balanced meal (example from random website)

Griddled chicken breast (done with olive oil with normal portion rice (2oz dry rice), spoon of basil/pesto sauce, some broccoli and other steamed/boiled veg comes to around 550 calories.

I was also a big lad a few months ago and changed my diet to the following:

Breakfast - big bowl porridge with brown sugar (yeah yeah I know, but I like it) mugs of tea with skimmed milk and a banana
Lunch - as much chopped raw veg as I can tolerate - usually half a courgette, carrots, some grapes, peppers, a pear and 5 almonds
Snacktime - a skinny latte from Costa
Dinner - some fish (say smoked salmon) made into a sauce with low fat creme fraiche, pasta made from pea flour (which avoids the carb) and a side salad with pickled chilli and/or a boiled egg in it. On another night dinner might be Cauliflower cheese with crispy topping made from breadcrumbs, plus some peas.

Sticking to this has lost me 42 pounds which equates to 7 inches off my waist, a smaller shoe size and a good amount of unhealthy interest from the missis in the sack.

Go for it - hope this helps. It does look like you have room for some improvements.

Keep meat and carbs apart, eat plenty of greens but ration the rice, spuds, pasta to an ice cream scoop if you eat meat. One day a week you can go a little further.
Stay off the sauce.
Wife did this, looked positively gaunt after about 6 weeks...

Better than munching on sugar and caffeine which is what OP is doing right now. It's great to spike your insulin then get some stimulants into your bloodstream. Fair bit of salt in pre-packed stuff would be the only concern.

If you're serious OP get into some meal prep. Cook a joint of meat/chicken on Sunday, cook up a large batch of something like bulgur or barley and that's your lunch sorted for the week, hard boil eggs for breakfast on the go or snacks. Make sure to eat your veggies at dinner time.

I can never understand why people on threads like this do one of two things

1- say 'i did this and it worked, therefor you should do it'
2- say 'completely change your diet and eat other foods, change your routine, get into meal prepping, blah blah'.

the guy has already been losing weight, he just needs to look at what he's eating and cut back here and there until he's at the desired weight.

Basically OP wants a healthy diet by putting in zero effort.
Not really happening is it.
