Do you live in the UK? I can’t imagine any UK GP sending the sputum for analysis. Waste of time. It will either resolve itself like the tens of millions of viruses we get each year, or if you are significantly worse than previous years or struggling to get your breath they may need antibiotics.

Sounds like a pretty standard winter bug to me unless I’m missing something OP?

No recommendations Isaac, just some news!
We are no longer in 'Winter' - if you go by the meteorological calendar, then Spring began on March 1, and if you abide by the astronomical calendar, Spring began 6 days ago on March 20th. Therefore, I conclude you have caught your first virus of the Spring!

Ok I had a day off, now it's back and as bad as before

Not wishing to scare you but a work colleague of mine started with a bad cough with similar symptoms to yours.He spent months coughing up chewy bits as you put it.
He finally went to the doctor who put him on various antibiotics to no avail until he was finally diagnosed with cancer.He died 6 months later.
I would seriously suggest seeking proper medical help if it persists

I think we just need to use common sense. If you have a cough for 2-3 weeks it’s probably a virus or infection and is pretty common/normal. If it lasts over a few weeks/month or is particularly vicious go see your GP.

(Obviously this is not medical advise. Just common sense).

Have had exactly this since Sunday lunchtime - really grim but hope it is finally going.

Not always the best option but I did used to find a good run, well ok jog, would often bring up enough green stuff to start the road to recovery.
