Is anybody else struggling big time this year or is it just me?

I’ve always had, normally a standard Piriton sorted it out but this year seems nothing including Fexofenadine seems to touch the sides - nasal passages that are so swollen I can’t breathe, with a steady drip of gunk too - that’s without mentioning the dry, itchy eyes. Not great for a golfer/cyclist....

Anybody else suffering, if so how do you get over it?

Avamys nasal spray - a mild steroid. I presume you know not to rub your eyes no matter how great it feels to do so (you’re just rubbing the pollen in!). I’ve also got some Optanol eye drops - too early to say how good they are but they do sting for a minute or so after use.

Thanks I’ll look that spray up - never normally have much luck with the sprays as I just sneeze it out?

Think it’s best used regularly a few times a day and the relief comes from that use rather than being instant.

A slightly horrible solution I heard was to try to wipe out your nostrils with a salt water solution to remove pollen and another a bit a Vaseline around the nose to trap the pollen.

I’m not too bad these days but remember it being a truly miserable few months in summer. I spent one winter snivelling after being put on the desensitising injections for months and that really did help next hayfever season.

Just closed the windows too....and off to wash my nose out in a second...hopefully that’ll help.

If not it’ll be a doctors appointment (well, if anything like last time it’ll be for 3 weeks time...)

Benadryl plus work for me. antihistamine with a
Decongestant.

It has been quite bad the past week.

Is fexofenadine more effective than cetirizine/loratadine?

I use Becanese as it's non drowsy. Long commute so can't risk the drowsiness of stronger antihistamines.

Fexofenadine once a day, topped up with benadryl two or three times a day. Pollen filtering fan in the bedroom. Surgical paper mask when it's really bad.

The paper mask thing - it looks weird but it works so well!

There's a piece on Bing News from the Mirror about putting Vaseline up the air intakes. The effects are highlighted with several exclamation marks, so presumably it also cures cancer and baldness.

The face mask tip is a good one, I use a HEPA fan filter at home which knocks the symptoms dead in minutes, as does the car air-con.

Homedics - yup, have two of them. I wouldn't say makes things 100% better but noticeable change.

Started using haymax which is beeswax rather than paraffin. I *think* it works better than vaseline. Plus, you can get it in lavender. Which is nice.

Since the beginning of June, I've been really struggling.

I meant to contact my GP for a jab in April, before my allergies kicked off, then forgot, and now I'm regretting forgetting!
I double-dosing Zyrtec as 1/day isn't enough ... 1 at bedtime, 1 in the morning now.

I had the jab for the first time this year. It has positively affected my life.

No symptoms at all since I had it after the Easter weekend. I have taken no other medication/sprays/tablets etc.

I paid for the injection, but it wasn't much c.£70

Interesting. Out of interest, what medication worked for you before the injection? I ask because not much works for me. Despite my cocktail of fexofenadine and benydryl, I end up (like right now) with fatigue and a racing pulse. Loratadine and citrizine do nothing for me.

I've used various pills and sprays over the years with no real success. I get painful sinuses and headaches normally with hayfever, so summer is usually a real bummer.

A couple of years ago I started using a boots product called "allergy barrier nasal spray", which is a powder you snort. The powder is described as inert cellulose powder of vegetable origin (!) with a peppermint aroma.

It's been a revelation. I still get a few sniffles and occasionally itchy eyes, but it allows me to function normally (although it makes your bogies crusty).

A strange one for me, I suffer badly with hayfever during grass season. I ended needing to doube up my asthma medicine (brown preventer) for different reasons and this given a huge reduction in hayfever symptoms. I top up with Loratadine and it all works fine.

Beconase spray is the same stuff as the brown inhaler, fexofenadine did nothing for me when prescribed.

Odd how it affects differently; I never used to suffer then gradually it crept up on me with each year becoming worse, last week I was awfuly bunged up (no sneezing though), felt like cobwebs were all all over my face, itchy eyes and the dermatitis on my hands was bad and generally I was itchy.

Spent the weekend at Glastonbury, forgot the Piriton but I've been fine, back home today and straightaway I can see it on one of my dogs (my youngest dog suffers terribly) and I'm already itching.

It's a weird thing.
