OK. I'm coming up to 67. I'm 5'10" tall and I weigh 145 pounds, having lost 22 pounds over the last six months. The weight has gone from my upper body and gut, but my bum is still a bit flabby. I swim a bit but not enough and I find it frustrating as I don't have a lot of upper body strength.

Question. Would joining a gym and doing some kind of weight training help me get a bit of muscle back on top and lose the flab around my hips and bum? I'm never going to be muscular and have no wish to be, but I'd like to get fitter and rearrange the weight, maybe put on a little more.

There's a gym within easy walking distance that seems to have every machine in the world but doesn't seem to offer much in the way of training, or not obviously, so I'd be out on my own a bit with a programme. Is this a good idea.

The aim is to be a bit fitter, a bit better shape and to fit into 34" waist straight jeans again.

If you've got the money then using a personal trainer is very effective.

Does the gym have free weights? In my experience the big lifts, such as squats, dead lifts and bench press, are best for overall growth and strength, machines isolate and don't exercise all the supporting muscles.

Very much this!

My lad's a Personal Trainer and has clients who have been going to the gym for years but has done more for them in 6 months than they achieved in many years of thinking they knew what they were doing.

Everyone's different and having someone who can properly tailor a programme to you makes the world of difference.

(If you're near to Chelmsford, happy to put you in touch with him)

Other than that, I would suggest looking at Beachbody. Online subscription fitness programmes with all manner of programmes and routines including specific areas of focus including arse (though you may end up with the ability too dance like a Brazilian Carnival Girl at the same time).

One caveat...the quality of personal trainers varies considerably, I would only use one through personal recommendation of because I KNOW they know their stuff, which can be a problem with someone new to gym

Absolutely correct!

In the absence of personal recommendations, several of the chain gyms operate PTs who are freelance but have use of the facilities in return for them 'donating' set hours to the gym each week. Although independent they have to undergo proper training and are regularly assessed so offer a level of service and care beyond that you'd be risking on just a web search.
