Shoulder Joint Pain
Discussion
A year ago (in July) I went to the gym for the first time in my life (I'm 34). I was doing the bench press machine and pushing really hard when my right shoulder started to hurt. Since then it hurts when I wash my hands, wipe my butt, pick the washing up off the floor etc etc. If I put both arms out in front of me and push together (like a clapping position) it feels terrible. The pain is comping from the joint. I went to the Doctors twice, they are useless and sent me to an ultrasound. The ultrasound woman wasn't interested in the location of pain, she was adamant to scan the top of the shoulder (where there was no pain) and then diagnosed me with Bursitis.
I have been reading up on Bursitis and I really am NOT convinced this is what I have. I've also been searching the web for similar injuries and all that is coming up is Rotator Cuff injuries and Buritis.
My question is, does anyone else suffer from similar?

I had similar, the pain was intense on certain movements, especially when putting my arm up my back or putting a coat on.
Turned out it was impingement syndrome and my clavical was catching in areas - possibly from weight training. Think they call it weightlifters shoulder.
The physio tried to give me exercises but in the end went to see orthopaedic surgeon who gave me a kenalog injection to where I said the pain was - within minutes the pain was gone for a week or so. He then later went on to do arthroscopy surgery to decompress the shoulder and shaved the end of the clavical off also. Now its 100%.
At your age if the symptoms are not getting better they should refer you to a surgeon - just tell them you don't think things are progressing and insist on a consultation.

Was the op under local anesthetic?Turned out it was impingement syndrome and my clavical was catching in areas - possibly from weight training. Think they call it weightlifters shoulder.

If ultrasound says you have bursitis you probably do have bursitis. This doesn’t sound like the cause of your symptoms however. It sounds like rotator cuff injury but a physio will diagnose this in under 30 minutes. If your GP won’t refer you then see one privately (about £30 for an hour). I’d urge you to do this sooner rather than later. The fact it’s already a year old is already a bad sign as it’s much harder to treat chronic soft tissue injuries. The bursitis is likely secondary to your initial injury. I have been reading up on Bursitis and I really am NOT convinced this is what I have. Next time you go to the gym start off light and progress up to “heavy lifting/pushing” over the first 6 weeks. After 6 weeks you (or any other healthy person) should be able to go as hard as you like with little chance of injury.
Good luck.
I want to thank you all for such good replies.
I have googled Rotator Cuff symptoms and it doesn't sound like that. The feeling which isn't terribly painful is further in the joint as apposed to the top.
I have another appointment with the Dr (for them to look at me with their professional confused expert look). Let's hope they refer me to a physio

Not surprised you've got no answers. Symptoms of what? The rotator cuff is just a collection of muscles tendons etc that surround your shoulder joint.BigTimmy said:

Possibly bursitis, or tendinitis of the long head of the bicep tendon, or front deltoid strain - a common bench press injury.Thank you all for your answers. It is right in the joint where the pain is coming from. Since then I have also developed elbow pain. Really sore when I lift things or grab things like a glass of water. I think it could be tennis elbow but I have done no strenuous exercises so totally miffed!
