Omega 3 capsule.

My cardiologist told me Cod Liver Oil can contain some nasties you would prefer to avoid.

I hope he gave you a clean bill of health but by any chance did you ask what they were and if the capsules contained the same?

No - I was just told that the liver concentrates toxins and without knowing the source of the cod livers, you could be ingesting said toxins. His advice was that Omega 3 may be more expensive, but you get all the benefits of Cod Liver Oil without risking the toxins.

(I'm fine now, take 6 tablets every day, incl. Omega 3 and have 2 stents.)

Interesting and yes I can see about the toxins. Cod feed in polluted waters, injest the toxins, live filters them out and bang.
Was considering CLO myself, will forget that one.
Omega 3 tablets, where from?
What about glucosamine?

I just buy a massive tub of supermarket own-brand Omega 3 every few months.

Mentioned this subject to my physio earlier today. We were walking along the beach together with the dogs as she's my wife.
I digress, anyway, when I said about the Cod Liver oil being contaminated she asked where the Omega 3 came from.
Couldn't answer, could it be exactly the sale source??
She also mentioned glucosamine again and commented that any of these, IF they work will take a long time, they are not going to be a quick fix. But I knew that bit.

Omega 3 supplements are not just sourced from the fish liver - so the toxin concentrations are significantly lower.

Cod isn't a great source of Omega 3 / fish oil either - so most Omega 3 comes from other sources such as herring and mackerel.

Fish oils better from real fish maybe?

You don't hear of cod with arthritis.

Krill oil is an alternative if you're worried about contaminants.

I tried a box of them a few years ago as it's what the cod eat but I never felt any benefits ( mentally or physically )

There was a "Trust me I'm a Doctor" episodes where they tested white fish diet vs oily fish diet vs Omega-3 capsules measuring some factor I can't remember but it was an influencer of blood pressure. They were surprised to find the capsules easily as effective as the oily fish (white fish doesn't have the same properties). I know they use a small sample size relative to full scientific studies but it was interesting given that they normally invariably quash a popular hypothesis. Not sure why cod liver oil is effective given the benefits of oily fish are generated by the flesh rather than the liver. I've been taking Omega-3 for a while now as I'm not a fan of salmon or trout and much as I love mackerel I can't eat it regularly.
