How to remove a splinter!

Sanding down the garden shed and collected this little beut under the fingernail...



The end snapped off the bugger so I couldn't extract it.
Could not face sitting in A&E all night and it was throbbing like hell.
Drastic action was required so out came the Tenon saw, followed by some very careful sawing


I won't lie and pretend I performed with a stiff upper lip.....tbh honest, halfway through I almost fainted but I got the bugger out!


Yes I know I need a manicure but I am a bricklayer so kind of excused.

Bricklayer you say! Some say a bricklayer is a carpenter with his head bashed in. Stay away from the wood.

I'm impressed. Last time I fked a nail up, I had to end up tearing my big toenail off. My hands looked like I'd murdered someone. Oh yeah, and it stung like fk during the process.

I held the saw still and dragged the nail over it as I had more control.....I think?

Mrs WindyCommon and I have successfully performed many battlefield operations on each other over the years, rather than having to go to A&E. As we gain experience, so our confidence grows. I see trouble ahead..!

As a climber, ex mind you, I'd have plugged the hole with super glue to prevent infection. Often used on a climb when the fingerprint are split! And used to great effect by soldiers.
Re the splinter in th OP, my approach would be different based on experience. A V cut in the nail to give a 2mm grasp with tweezers worked for me. Quicker heal also. Maybe next time?

Were you involved in the making of the 'Saw' horror film franchise? If not, can I suggest you should have been.

Out of interest, what happens if you don't extract a splinter? Does it work its way out naturally or stay there forever?
