Could anyone offer some advice on how to stay away from both of the above.
Im in my mid 30s and weekends have more often than not resulted in going for a few drinks mostly through boredom and having a group of friends that are always out, which then results in a few more drinks, consuming coke and having a late night and the effects of an awful hangover for 2 days afterwards.
Dont really drink or use drugs in the week but find it rather hard to say no at weekends mostly through to boredom I suppose but realising at 35 it's time to not do either anymore. Sadly though it is quite tempting to give in as soon as its friday.
Im fairly sure some others would have been in the same boat in the past so would really appreciate your advice and to know how you moved away from that lifestyle.

Find a hobby or pass time that'll take you in to a different crowd, so long as your social circle are the druggy kind it'll always be there tempting you.

Break with these yahoo friends for at least a year. And make time to chase those other goals that have always alluded you because of the detrimental behaviour.

You are at a crossroad now and YOU choose which way to turn. Be daring and choose for yourself.

For a long time I had bad habits/freinds. A clean break and moving away was what worked for me, then just avoid new people you come across that are doing those things you no longer want to do.

It is very easy to just go back down the same road again though!

Get married and have a couple of kids, you'll have no money left for anything else.

Seriously though, you have answered your own question. If you can't say no, don't put yourself in that position. If the people you hang out with are leading you astray, hang out with different people, preferably people who spend their weekends doing something else. You're 35, you make your own choices

I’d imagine the excess booze is what leads to lower inhibitions which leads to the coke. What I mean is if you weren’t pissed you’d probably not be doing coke.

Take a look at The Sinclair Method (TSM). You basically take a pill (Naltrexone - a harmless non addictive opiate blocker) an hour before you drink. The medication stops the endorphins from being released that provide a reward to the brain from drinking.

Over time your brain is rewired and you either become a normal drinker again or just decide to stop. The benefit of the method is that there is no cold turkey. No white knuckling cravings. No detox. Works for chronic alcoholics and binge drinkers just the same. No meetings. Only rule is take the pill an hour before and drink normally.

See if there are any CAUK or NAUK groups meeting locally to you. You will find a number of people in a similar position. Found them informative and really helpful in my experience, allbeit a working point of view.

Perhaps move way from the area, getaway from that crowd. Then go to rehab type sessions to solve underlying issues.

Remind yourself that coke and alcohol when mixed creates a chemical in the body that stops the heart, enjoy going to your peers funerals in their 40s

Also this is going to sound fking stupid but just stop doing it, find a way, any way to stop but it's a lot easier than you think it will be.

I dare say they have created a new profile.

I'd stop going out just to drink, join a less racy group that coke isn't going to be a feature with.

Having kids is another alternative, you wont have a penny in your pocket or afford to drink more than a couple of pints a week - that's my experience. With my family history I keep a tight rein on my alcohol consumption.

The real thing is you actually wanting to stop. My dad was as bad an alcoholic as you'd want to experience (2 bottle of spirits in a pub every day socialising type), his nightlife for the last 29 years has been AA meetings. None of his extreme drinking buddies who continued to drink ever made it, most died in their 40s and 50s.

Good Luck.

Whilst I was never a massive coke head but I did dabble from time to time when I was younger.

The epiphany came about after a night of boozing, then a few lines, decided to head home with a few mates, more drinking, did a "rock star" line and had a major whitey. Felt absolutely sh*te the next day, had an argument with my brother (who'd also been out with us that night), and decided to seek solace with a girl I'd been seeing for a few weeks (who I'm now married to). She didn't really know about my dark side.

And that was the end of that, settled down with the girl, got married, had kids, and the mere thought of doing anything daft like that now seems like a very bad idea. I did have some fun times with drugs though E was much more entertaining than charlie.

Still drink too much but it's more the several bottles of wine over the weekend rather than pub/club binges.

I think this is good advice. You state boredom at weekends is the start of the spiral - so finding a hobby will then create a different social group hopefully without the same social habits.

Not to the same extent, but when I moved through a job move, I got a completely different social circle which made me 'drug' free. Still went out drinking (although that has rapidly diminished since having kids) and definitely did not miss the previous 'scene'. Happened overnight when I moved.....

Hmm, the medical reasons to pack it in should be enough.

I thought i was taking the piss, and i was, and now my liver is damaged beyond repair and now i will never drink again, or rather can't or it might just be the end of the road.

Also, the coke you are taking is probably nowhere close to as good as you think - god knows what is in it.

When you're on it, see that rush you feel, the rate of your heart, you are only speeding up the inevitable. Your heart is only good for so many beats; it's up to you how you use them.

Thanks. There has been some really good advice which has been taken on board.
Bit of an update I managed to stay away from drinking which like scottydoesntknow mentioned leads to coke.
Dont feel bad for staying away in fact quite the opposite.
Had a great early morning drive through some country roads with the roof down on Saturday morning.Ive also been getting back into the gym plus not feeling terrible on a Monday morning has been a bit of a novelty but I got up for work this morning feeling great instead of crap.
Going to listen and stay away from that group of people around evenings and weekends and try and focus on better more positive things in life.
