This is more a case of am I the only one?... rather than what's wrong?...but happy to receive the wisdom of others.

I'm 52, fit and healthy, average on the booze. A recent mid life MoT was passed with flying colours. I've no problem with strangers and if it's possible, have the exact opposite in that I positively relish meeting new people. Professionally, I have long been required to 'work the room', do public speaking and all that, none of which phases me. Without wishing to sound brash, I consider myself to be confident.

But.... I have one thing I can't shake.

When in social situations, whether one-to-one or wider gatherings and generally amongst people I'm not familiar with, I find it often the case that I can't lift a cup or glass without my arm going into a shake. The problem tends not to show itself with, say a pint glass or mug, but put a bone china cup of tea in front of me or delicate wine glass and the fear of looking like a berk means I leave it in place until no one's looking. And it's then fine. Had this for best part if 20 years but as I've been doing more and more socials over the years, it's become more and more noticeable.

To be honest, if this is the only ailment to afflict me over the years, then I'll take it but curious to know what it is and if it's just me.

Hi,

I believe you did cover it in the OP but I was wondering, if you lift the same thing in your own place and not under any pressure is there no shakes at all?

If so, it is not a physical issue but a mental one based on the stress or anxiety of the situation?

I definitely used to get that and usually in similar situations. Never really thought much about it and havent noticed within recent years.

Definitely a thing though.

This.

It runs in the blokes in my family. Mines quite mild but the only time my hands are really tremor free are when I am 100% relaxed or had a few drinks. My Dads has got worse over the years( he's now nearly 70) and always has a very obvious tremor now.( not at rest though which is how its different from say Parkinsons)

My brother has it to some degree as well and even my 13 year old nephew.

Its believed its caused by an overactive nervous system but its not sinister, and is considered harmless if not frustrating.

Its worse when you're nervous and some people probably think I have Parkinsons at these times ( though conditions not related) but its just me and its not going to kill me!
