Alternatives to salt water mouthwash following dental work?

I had two teeth extracted yesterday.

All went well, but I'm struggling with the salt water mouthwash my dentist recommended. It seems to provoke an almost instant gag reflex, and I can't rid my mouth of the horrible taste without copious spitting (which I've been told not to do because of the wound / stitches).

I'm keen to keep everything clean in order to minimise the risk of infection, and not to inhibit the healing process.

Is there anything I could use instead of salt water? Would one of the commercially available mouthwashes be ok? I have some Listerine in the cupboard.

Thoughts / ideas / experiences welcomed in the usual way...!

NOT Listerine, loads of alcohol in it so it’ll sting a bit!
Try Difflam rinse, mild antiseptic and will numb things a little bit too. Available over the counter from a pharmacy. Tastes quite nice too.

Are you putting too much salt in the rinse?

I found manuka honey good, you know the really expensive certified kind. Just a blob on the tongue and carefully placed at the socket.

You want to be really careful not to dislodge or dissolve the clot.

When I had quite a lot of work done I used a chlorohexadine based mouth wash that seemed to do the trick. It's not very nice stuff, but less revolting than salt water. Don't use it for too long as it stains your teeth.

Corsodyl maybe? I'm sure my wife was told to use this when she had a wisdom tooth taken out.

I used Corsodyl when I had my tonsils taken out recently. No stinging at all.

Tastes pretty mingling though, the Difflam is better, also the slight anaesthetic effect is useful.
