So I've had a mole just above my arse for years. (Not on my actual ring! laugh ) But every now it and then I catch it on my clothes, and it will bleed a tiny amount. (bright red blood) So of course then it becomes more prominent for a bit and I spend a week catching it, before it shrinks down and I stop catching it.

It's not visible (unless I'm naked, and you really don't want to see that! eek ) so a little scar tissue isn't the end of the world. But looking to get it removed. My local private "pay as you go" (Spire Healthcare - St Anthonys, Cheam) wants £975 to do it. But Google gives many options for less that that. Often around £300. Price is a factor obviously, but so is general aptitude and after care etc etc.

I assume it's not a cancerous one, but would I be better off getting my GP to look first before going elsewhere? (To avoid the inevitable 6 months wait for the 1 NHS Surgeon to be available)

Looking for any personal recommendations in the London / Surrey area. Prepared to travel accordingly.

Cheers

For anything other than purely cosmetic surgery, you normally have to get a GP referral before a private GP will see you anyway, that is my experience at least.

I'd get your GP's opinion first.

I'm pretty moley and generally the GP will err on the side of caution and get you a 2 week appointment to see a dermatologist for them to have a look to make sure it's not cancerous, perhaps go down that route then decide what to do after the dermatologist's appointment??

I went to my local GP and they booked me in to get it "nipped off"... was in and out within 20 minutes. Was expecting pain but honestly didn't even know they'd done it... sent it off to the lab for analysis, heard nothing since, happy days.

I had a basal cell carcinoma develop on my nose that I saw my GP about - referred to dermatoligist within a fortnight.
Dermatoligist asked me to strip and wanted to examine my whole body eek
She was checking every mole and earmarked one on my leg for removal, which I thought was fine.
Nose job went fine and no scarring. Leg mole was deep and took longer to heal. There's a purple 1cm long scar where it was, but better to have a dodgy mole removed than it to cause problems in the future.

Definitely go to the Dr first, better to be safe than sorry, I had two small one's removed a few years ago, looked innocent enough but were both cancer. All good now.

Minor surgery at GP if causing discomfort/impacting quality of life; they just freeze it, stings a bit but no aftercare and done in 10 minutes

I've been thinking about this too. My back is covered in moles of various sizes, I'm talking at least several hundred on my back alone. There are a few (5 or 6) that are raised and I keep catching and then they bleed for a while so need to do something soon. I do have some down my sides too and they now appear to be spreading round to my chest and stomach.

It would be well worth your while to get them seen.

Agreed, it'll take a Dermatologist a couple of minutes to confirm whether they are of concern or not thumbup

Well had a quick appointment this morning! My local practice do a "walk in" session first come first served every morning. There no guarantees you'll see your GP, but you'll get seen. Only a few people this morning. The cold rainy weather means the chavs and never working types don't come out biggrin

Physician, not my GP, had a look, is happy it's not Cancerous. It's not brown/black, round and not weird shaped which are apparently the cues

Enquired and was told minimum 18 weeks for surgery at Hospital. But they have a Dr in house that can do minor surgery, so appointment booked with him in early Jan to see if he's interested. Again no guarantees. No harm in waiting and see if he can do it sooner. Private place will do it pretty much next week.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. Will update in due course.

I've got a lot of moles all over my body and now have been advised to regularly (every 3 months) get my body photographed (same angles, light etc) and compare photos and if any significant changes then go to GP.

A few years ago, Mrs M noticed a mole on my bum cheek had grown and changed colour so straight off to GP.

He looked and agreed possibly needs referral and liek the OP 18 weeks wait!!

Fortunately I was covered by Mrs M Private Healthcare from her company so off to see dermatologist the following week.

They examined, and agreed it could possibly be dodgy so best have it off, return a week later and after half an hour under the knife a few stitches and dodgy mole gone to be sent off for testing.

A few weeks later called back, results of test...................................... it was a bruise, not even a mole let along a dodgy mole!

To make matters worse, Mrs Ms healthcare company got the bill and even though we'd done the process properly they pointed out the max payout for an "Outpatient treatment including Consultations" was £500................. the bill for everything was £1750!

So, it cost me £1,250 to have a bruise cut off my arse...... thanks Mrs M frown

I had similar on my forehead in the past, as well as some skin tags, one of which was itching like fury. GP first and he said referral to the NHS dermatologist which was months off. Or I could be seen privately outside office hours by a consultant dermatologist within a week. As I’m a contractor, time is money, so it was far cheaper to go private. Nothing to worry about, a few quick squirts with the liquid nitrogen and all was well.

As for catching it on your clothes, a work colleague had this on a mole on his back due to wearing some new boxer shorts with a poorly sewn on label. The corner was rubbing right on the mole. This bled, healed, then it caused a spot, then a little bump, then a painful big red bump, and he ended up in surgery having an abscess removed the size of a decent plum. It was right next to his spine, and the docs reckoned another 3 weeks, surgery would have been a different matter. All from an ingrowing hair on a mole on his back due to some cheap boxer shorts. The mole was no more too....

I had a mole removed from my back, done on the NHS, not a long wait. The main factor for them starting it was I was not happy with it. I got the results back from the lab, all was good.

A little while ago a PHer uglymug was not happy with his mole, I started to comment that it was most likely nothing to worry about. I was then proven wrong.

Wait till Jan, get your local surgery to remove the thing.

I did have them checked by a dermatologist at the hospital many years ago and the verdict was that they are Seborrheic Keratosis (a form of wart). I'm away overseas until April but will get them looked at again when I return although it will be over a year before I get seen if my daughter is anything to go by, she has a few too and ended up going private to have three removed as they said it would be a long, long time to get them done on the NHS. Oh, and it wasn't cheap!!

I had a mole on my stomach that annoyed me in much the same way as the OPs. I went to the GP, who said I should book an appointment with the nurse, which I did. It stuck out a little bit so, she tied a bit of cotton around it really tight and after a few days, it just fell off.

You might want to consider Ophelia Veraitch, a private dermatologist in London. I’ve had personal experience and found her to be professional, thorough, and reassuring throughout the process.
