I struggled with Anxiety 5 or 6 years ago and its alost gone now. But.
If I drink alcohol the following two days are dreadful.
People call it Hanxiety.
Heart thumps away, night time sweating, really horrible.
But I like Alcohol?
I only drink once a week, on a Friday. I only drink Lager.
Will it ever stop. I dont want to give up completely but I'm really thinking about it.
Oh I'm 60.
Would Betta Blockers help?
Thanks for looking.

If you do find a cure to this, and a cure to hangovers as well, then let me know, we could go into business together.

Alcohol... it’s borrowing tomorrow’s happiness to enjoy today.

It never used to happen?
I'm putting it down to age a bit.
I've been prescribed some Betta Blockers for occasional use in case of panic attacts.
I'll see if they have any effect on Saturday morning. I'm really pissed of about it. I like a drink, occasionally and I dont overdo it.

What is so good about alcohol that you go through 2 days of hell just to keep doing it? Stop drinking alcohol, there are far better things to drink out there, there is even non-alcoholic beer as well if you still want the taste.

Yeah I used to get a feeling like this as I got older (38 now) and used to feel really dreadful and almost suicidal the next few days after a big session (cringe) so I don't bother any more, last 3-4 years I've not been properly drunk, couple of beers or half bottle of wine is my limit now.

I really don't miss it.

I'm reading the replys with great interest.
Its a social thing really, but I do get it.
6 hour's of feeling great at a price of 48 hours
Not good Maths.
Its the weaning off / stopping which will be difficult when in company/out and about people offering drinks.
I gave up smoking 7 years ago, and was shocked to find so many people offering me ciggs when they knew I'd just stopped.
I think its a jealously thing ?
Fortunately I never faltered not even once.
I'll have a drink on Friday , and see how the blockers work over the weekend, but I think I know what the future will be.
Thanks.

If it really affects you so much, could you not just give it up?

Is it really worth it ?

Alcohol is a depressant.
When we're feeling low, if our mind isn't in check, we have a tendency to combine rumination with catastrophising which leads to anxiety. A bit Yoda-ish, I know.

There's nothing wrong with having a drink but it's how much we have and how it affects us that can be the problem. I love a good single malt. smile

I certainly feel it if I've had a couple of pints the previous night in that I am less motivated to make sales calls (which I find difficult as it is!).

Ive had this for 20 years if I overdo things. I end up with anxiety for a couple of weeks, which gradually fades away.

I make a point of only drinking wine at home and no more that a bottle! If I go out, stick to bottled beer and make sure 100% I've eaten and don't go nuts!

Ive slipped up a few time and wake up with the shakes and sweating, running after the event helps to burn off adrenaline as that's really what it is.

Once your scared of anxiety it only gets worse. Just think its your bodies reaction to booze (poison)

I get a form of this. I'm a light drinker. Had two pints of 4.5% lager down the pub - not drunk at all - by the time I was home and watching TV my chest was pounding as hard as I've known; I could see the pulse in my neck in the mirror.

I have anxiety issues also, and found a beer or two would take it away, but this side effect is worse still so barely drink at all now.

That's well worth reading for anyone with heart issues.

I cut back massively on my alcohol intake when I was put on a beta blocker and an angiotensin receptor blocker after heart surgery. If I do have a drink (I had six in the whole of last year) I pretty soon know it so the answer is simple - I don't drink.
