My kid has just been offered a trial at a rowing club. I mucked about on a concept 2 as a teenager but nothing much more .... so in an effort to mix up my cross training I thought I’d do more rowing so we can bond over split times and strokes per minutes smile

I like a goal so thought I’d enter the championship (not until December) as something to focus on..... anyone been (I worked at a venue where it took place in the 90’s but assume it’s a bigger deal now?)

Some of the times in the 40-50 age are way over 7 mins..... what’s the score there? Are there people that just go along for fun (like park run???) and so I won’t look too daft or is it all very serious?

No idea what time I’d aim for as been focusing on my running of late ..... 6.45 maybe???? Wild guess.

My daughter is a rower and competed in the indoor champs last year.
Didn’t win but really enjoyed it.

I’d say yes, people take it serious!
I had visions of me doing it this year (over 50’s just) but looking at the times last year I think I’d need to be just below 7 mins to be top 10, which ain’t going to happen (Pb is 7:28).

As for training for it, don’t worry about beating someone else’s strokes per minute, it’s how much power you push through.
You can have a lower rate but go further with the right technique.
Daughters training regularly consisted of stupid things like 20 mins at rate 28 or 30 non stop - I’ve tried that, and I’m obviously not fit enough to last laugh

Women would win this hands down. Oh, wait, not that kind of rowing.

My thinking with anything like this is "be better than most" - as long as I'm in the top half I'm happy. I've done this with anything from Park Runs to Ultra marathons to paddle board races. None of which I'm great at, but even if just for a laugh..."better than most" seems a good goal.

So there where 80 rowers in my age group so 39th place would need a 6.47 (gets easier in 3 years when I hit 50!) Think I'll give it a go.

Will be cool as my kid is just 16 so by December will be in the lower 6th form age group where they row 2k as well....and he'd need similar times to not look daft - so we can spend all year trying to stay ahead of the other smile

If you’re both on a level field it could be good fun to compete with each other.
If he’s anything like my kids he’ll do all he can to beat his dad!

Go for it!

This is the set up - it’s quite impressive, but probably a touch intimidating when you’re on the actual floor...

My daughter at the end - didn’t quite throw up!

Cool!

I run endurance runs and obstacle course races so will be a good addition to that training!

My kid is the same height as me (6ft6) but 30 years younger and I have 25KG on him.....right now I'm ahead. He turns 17 in September - there is no way on earth I am going to be beaten by a 16 year old but after his birthday......could get tricky smilesmile

Ooh I never knew this was a thing, I did. 6:46 when I was 20/21. I’m now 20 stone and my belly gets in the way!! A 42k in 3 hours 16 as well while trying to impress a woman, good times!!

There used to be a rowing league on the internet but that was just a concept 2 site you could register on.

Go for it, things like this look great fun !

Dave!

My best was 5.54 in around 1992 ish. My kid is only just 16 so counting the days till he gets a PB faster than that.....If I'm VERY lucky, I think I've got about a year left biggrin

If he gets a time like that he needs to be picked for GB trials!

Of course, being fast on the erg doesn’t always transfer to the water...
