How to relax on days off
Discussion
I'm unsure if this should go in the lounge or here. I figured here as it's more health related.
I love my job. It's what I've wanted for ten years. I've got an OK shift pattern (on paper, I start this one on Wednesday, two early, two lates, two nights (or sometimes 1900 to 0400), then four days off.
It's stressful what I do at times (police) and keen to make the most out of my rest days.
Money is tight at the moment, so needs to be free or as cheap as possible. (I've got £100 for the month after bills for the house and food have come out).
Tuesday im picking up a push bike. My fitness will benefit and got some lovely places around here.
I'm wary that it's very easy to sit inside watching TV which I don't want to do.
I hate the gym with a passion. Which is part of the reason why I've got a bike to get out and about. I'm most likely going to cancel my gym membership this month (there is one at work so not too much of an issue).
Gone a bit off topic but looking for ways to relax and take my time off work.

The lifestyle gurus will tell you to have three hobbies
- A hobby that keeps you fit - that will be the cycling then
- A hobby that lets you be creative
- A hobby that helps you network
So, two blanks to fill in

I've got it covered.
Walk to the pub
Liquid networking
I'm already an accomplished piss artist
More seriously. I've got into a few things this last year. Walking with a local group. Indoor climbing and have just been gifted a guitar.
Already do Circuit Marshaling, sim racing and all the other usual car stuff.

Similar position, high pressure / stressy job (which I completely love).
I make sure I run for 30mins a day or get in >20miles on the bike, the latter being my preference, and also having a couple of hours with my kid each night.
All work and no fun makes for a boring existence, exercise also does wonders for both the mental and physical.

Lose yourself in a good museum. My favourite is a small museum off the A14 near kettering, which as an airbase launched the spies during WW2, and after the was became a US missile site. A fascinating history and has made me want to learn more.
The other idea is to volunteer. There are some great charities out there who ard crying out for help- physical, or just talking.

I'd try to set a routine for your rest days.
Household jobs into one of them, a cycling day, a day with your significant other/friends/family, a day to catch up on TV and do some form of hobby that keeps your brain busy around the home.
I currently work every other weekend so family & partner time happens on a weekend, household jobs and me days are when I'm off during the week.

Have you considered fishing?
I was having a tough time relaxing a few years ago, maybe 5 or so ago.....
Big responsibilities at work and the phone never stopped, whether it be calls or emails.
I went to the local trout fishery with my brother, and never looked back!! I nearly panicked when I realised that I never had a phone signal, to the point that I nearly left! But stuck with it. I found it the most relaxing thing I had done in a long time. To the point I went to the local outdoors store the following week and bought a nice comfortable chair for my 3 hours rather than sitting on a log!
I did that regularly for about a year, and was a great way to relax during a particularly stressful period. Especially knowing that phone wasn’t going to annoy me!

te then!Relaxing is doing something that makes you feel good, that's it.
As for a hobby that "helps you network", FRO!
Get that gym membership cancelled asap if you're not using it, So now you have an extra £30? per month to play with.
I'm another fan of walking, I cycle a lot, and lift weights 4 times a week, but find walking to be the most accessible and relaxing out of those, I can just decide on a whim I want to go for a walk, and go out of the front door 30 seconds later. Maybe take a camera if you have one or just use your phone and take some photos while you're out and about, appreciate the beauty in the world.

I am in a similar position. Love my work, hate the gym. Quite often it can take me a few days to switch off fully from work, so most weekends ( I have a regular 9-5 role) I am still checking emails etc.
When on holiday for a week, this can impact the holiday through to the Tuesday - unfortunately my wife and kids notice this, as I slowly disconnect!
I have taken to switching off work emails and messaging whilst on holiday and set better delegation of tasks at work.
I have tried walking and cycling and this does work for me. However I don't do this enough to wind down. I find I need to be out for 2-3hours to really make a difference without the family ( ie with friends or alone). Getting this opportunity is difficult though - always something to do and I do love my wife and kids too!! Luckily, I have some great outdoors on my doorstep. In fairness, they do go and play tennis and leave me at home Saturday mornings for an hour or so........
So overall, I won't change things drastically at the moment, but I symphasize...... Just don't know what the complete solution is?
